Hey guys its been a while since i have been on here. (caught 4wd bug and wasted heaps of money also lazy)

I was recently talking about starting to do some bodywork etc on my torana to a fellow worker. He then said that his dad was looking at selling his hq monaro that had been off the road for 20 odd years and about 8 -10 years ago had been painted and never reassembled.

I quickly organised to go look at the car. This is what i found

Attached File  Resized_20170513_121652.jpeg   241.84K   6 downloads

After a short time a price was agreed on and over the next week i organised some cash and the next weekend i picked her up

Its a 6cyl base model monaro 173 3 speed manual in Lima mint with antique saddle interior. As it has had the GTS treatment I will leave it as it is.

for some reason it was wet rubbed and never polished, The paint work is good but not great, the bonnet has crows feet and it has a fair few imperfections over it but for the time being it will stay as it is . The chrome work has suffered due to sitting for so long.

Over the next week or so i cleaned the car and started working out what was missing. I found heaps of parts are missing so I soon found a rusty hq ute for a few hundered dollars for parts.

The car came as a roller.

It needs all the suspension and brakes going through and i'm still missing a heap of parts

I plan to get it on the road and use it as it is for a few years until i build a sbc and th350/400 for it

Cheers Vinny

Great score. Will the colour stand some GTS blackouts rather than trying to colour match the bonnet? Maybe orange or white?

I have thought about putting gts blackouts on but i think i will do a closed door respray eventually and then make my mind up. Here's a few more pics

Thanks yeah there isn't much that will make me sell my Torana.

So i found water leaking onto the front floor on both sides. I was worried about plenum rust so i stripped the dash and all the vents etc.

The plenum and outer cowel panel turned out to be in good condition with only surface rust. I did find that the seam sealer is missing in some spots and cracked in other spots letting water through.

So all the old seam sealer is going to be removed treat any rust, fish oil the plenum and reseal it.

Well I got one of the missing pieces of stainless $425 later i got a dented lh door moulding..... (I still need a drivers side)

Attached File  Resized_20170617_111856.jpeg   153.98K   10 downloads

I then removed the front clip so i can paint the firewall and lower section of the plenum.

Attached File  Resized_20170702_140233.jpeg   99.91K   10 downloads

So it looks like i found other issue that was hiding under the paint. I'm not sure i want another unfinished project when you find this sort of stuff.

I plan to get the firewall and chassis sandblasted.

I will rebuild all the suspension and brakes.

Correct. It's the end of Internet forums as we know them.

So the car has now had the firewall unpicked and we are replacing both the floors (Due to previous accident damage and poor repairs)

So my parts Ute came in handy

I spent a huge amount of time on the bead blaster at work cleaning up all the smaller parts. i got a few back painted.

It's a good feeling to see some progress instead of stripping everything

That must be a common thing with Monaro coupes, mine had the exact same problem with the front passenger's seat. I suspected it's from impatient people in the back pushing on the seat to get out?

Hi Vinny, nice find, got 1 myself & yours has a lot less rust than the 1 my nephew came home with for $6K.

I noticed your got your chassis rails out, I've got the body mount bushes to do on mine soon & have a question.

Can you remember if the rear L & R side bushes were installed reverse to the front bushes under the footwell?

The shop manual shows them as smaller plain bush/washer to body & the front the larger with tube & integral washer to body.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

ps; can scan & email the underbody measurements to square it all up when re-assembling if you need them.
