Hmmm a few shortened racing careers there me thinks!!

Back when the balls were big & safety was a small (nonexistent ) thought!

Good pics but!

Hi

It's hard to believe that harnesses weren't compulsory in Formula 1 until 1972. Apparently it was considered to be safer to be thrown out of the car than to stay within it.

Cheers

Sometimes I wonder Bazza...a lot of those drivers seemed to get up and walk/crawl away....maybe the speeds weren't that high

I don't know what the correct word is, but it seems to me that any black and white negative that has been kept clean produces a photo with superior "resolution" to the colour ones.  As far as shutter speed goes, if the camera is tracking the car then it doesn't matter.

Here is another shot which shows the anguish some of these brave souls had to endure once their car stopped.

1965 Aussie Paul Hawkins, one of only two drivers to have put a grand prix car into Monaco Harbour. The other was Alberto Ascari

so he is in good company.

It's amazing just how many of the blokes in roll overs have their arms flailing about. I have rolled three cars and never let go of the steering wheel.  I remember Craig Lowndes saying that when he had the big crash at Calder Park back in 1999, while the car was sliding on its roof he put his fingers through the front of his helmet and pulled down on the chin guard. Not to keep his helmet on, but to protect his hands when the car started rolling.

We run arm restraints in the sprint car and in the rally car it’s cross your arms on your chest and wait till it’s over
