Hey Bat,
I'm assuming you haven't noticed this little problem that needs fixing so the rubber boot will seal properly in the firewall.

That hole looks about right for a cable clutch conversion?

as far as i know and when i striped the car it was all original
Posted 15 February 2019 - 01:09 PM
Sorry, I'm not implying there is anything sus about the cars originality just it looks like someone has enlarged the pushrod hole at the bottom for whatever reasn.

Certainly a journey. Well done.
In my humble opinion, the 173S is I believe a very rare engine - basically only from around July 71 through to Dec 71 approx.
I wrote an extensive article on this engine (GTR) in a Hunter Valley Torana Club Newsletter quite some time back.
Keep posting the updates.

Send me a PM.
Mine was a 26 June 1971, making it almost the last of the 161S engines.
I had always thought the 173S was first up around 3 July, so yours must be one of the very first of the 173S.

Fill it in. It shouldn't be like that. It left the assembly plant with a nice round hole for the pushrod boot to fit into.

Cannot be the result of a cable clutch conversion. That is where the brake booster bracket mounts. The hole aligns with the brake pedal and pushrod.

thanks dave
any ideas why this would be sloted

Check your brake pedal to see if any modifications have been done to it. That cutout is like the pushrod clevis pin has been lowered on the pedal so the hole in the firewall had to be clearanced to prevent the pushrod from fouling.
Or perhaps the booster mounting bracket or relay levers have been modified.
There weren't any extra electrical wires, cables or hoses running through there when you stripped the car down?

no no extras going through there
being thinking about why
could be because the rh rail was 20 + mm back
whitch could have kicked the front of the booster up
maybe
