I think it would be easier and quicker to see a pic of the actual gearbox / bell housing and shifter.

According to the LC parts cattledog, 7211158 is a "CASE - Transmission" for "VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 1600 4 CYLINDER ENGINES"

It an original Opel 4 speed to suit a LC GTR or XU1 cast bottom plate and date coded 7-9-70

Items that are with it

Original bell housing

Reversing switch

Gear stick

Clutch folk

Original Speedo drive

I have 3 other complete Opel gearboxes as well and one of them is to suit a hk with the tin plate date coded 1967

I give this gentleman all the info about the box but he needed to hear it from others, as you can see by the first lot of pics he as already been burnt once

Anyways good luck with it give it a freshen up and away you go

Cheers gong

I am eplying to this older post.

Am I right, the Opel 4 speed manual gearbox was only used in the LC 6 cylinder Torana?

An Australian built gearbox replaced the Opel gearbox in the LJ 6 cylinder Torana?

The Opel gearbox was a stop gap unit used until the Austalian designed unit came along?

The Opel 4spd was initially offered in the HR Holden, followed by HK, T & G 6cyl passenger vehicles and subsequently the LC Torana 6cyl models.

Around the start of July 1971 the Opel 4spd (option code M20) was replaced by the the Australian built M20 4spd transmission in LC Torana 6cyl right hand drive models. Production of HG passenger vehicles had ceased by this time.

The Opel 4spd continued to be used in Australian assembled LC and LJ left hand drive 6cyl models.

it seems that this was a result of parts sharing between Holden, Vauxhall & Opel that began in the late 1960s. In July 1971, according to your information, GMH replaced the Opel gearbox in the 6 cylinder Torana but then added the Vauxhall 1600 OHC engine in the 4 cylinder Torana!

I don’t think it is even an “Opel” box. Maybe Opel design is a better term. AFAIK they were built in the Phillipines for Asian vehicle use. Probably saved GMH a few $ per box over the US built Saginaw which was what was used standard in 6cyl HK and HT commercials. If the Saginaw had been comparable cost that probably would have been used in LC XU1 and 6yl HK-HG.

GMH refer to it as an OPEL 4 spd transmission in the August 1971 dealer service letter.

I remember another dealer service letter about a production change to the bellhousing for HR Holden fitted with the OPEL 4 spd transmission.

I have a vague memory of reading somewhere that the OPEL 4spd was assembled in the GM Philippines facility where they assembled Chevrolet, Opel and Holden (Torana)

Reading between the lines I'd reckon most of the gearbox components were produced by OPEL and CKD to GM Philippines.

Or it’s like GM South Africa. They built Chevrolet design engines, transmissions and rear axles to increase the local content, for installation in Holden vehicles they assembled as Holden or Chevrolet vehicles. In reality not that much different to TH180 boxes built here as Trimatic or Buick design engines built here for Holdens. I reckon it’s Opel design, produced in the Phillipines. Might be some imported content.
