I have always been a fan of bringing the exterior colour into the interior :spoton:

No worries Chris, and I really appreciate your input. I spose that my mind was pretty well made up before I posted, but just wanted to throw some pics up here to see if anyone else had any other ideas.

evil UC, it's a favourite technique of mine aswell. Especially with metal dashes, tops of doors etc.

no worries mate!

as i said, ive got the orange strips on the top of my doors, i just feel that in the LJs, especially with the way the crash pad is, (and the colour of yours) that the colour doesnt go all that great across the dash.

Are you doing the engine bay black or purpull

I'm not touching the engine bay until I do something with the engine. But I think I'll paint it Purr Pull when I do...

I'm at a bit of a dilemma... I dunno what to do with my dash/carpet... I have photochopped a couple of options up. Note hastily drawn centre console :P It's just to give a rough idea. -

Option 1: Dash pad recovered/painted creamy brown to match seats, dash metal painted Purr Pull, dark brown carpet -

Posted Image

Option 2: Lighter dash pad, original brown dash metal, dark brown carpet -

Posted Image

Option 3: Stock brown dash pad, metal painted Purr Pull, dark carpet -

Posted Image

Option 4: Stock everything, dark carpet -

Posted Image

Option 5: Stock everything, medium carpet -

Posted Image

I've pretty much made my mind up with the dark carpet, but if I keep the dash original I will probably go a slightly lighter shade to match. I also plan to use a new style Autotecnica steerer, and I might paint the insert(s) Purr Pull to match the dash... Something like one of these, but with Purr Pull instead of Red or Blue...

Posted Image

Any criticism more than welcome :D

Tim

Tim, Have u considered gloss black for the metallic surfaces, cream dashpad, Purple carpet (try Knox auto carpets, they have great bright colours now)

Purple carpet would be a bit of overkill... And it would really need to be a very close match to Purr Pull for it to be effective.

Probably didn't need to quote my whole post either :P

FWIW I would stick with a theme - as in the first picture.

Adding the brown destroys the theme and devalues the overall look.

If you want to keep the brown inside then I reckon keep it all - not bits and pieces. Some of the best looking modified cars aren't really modified at all, but work with the factory look and enhance it through appropriate wheels/paint colour.

The first picture ie: purple dash, cream dash pad, dark brown carpet?

I was just thinking that I could probably go a light brown carpet, to match the seats rather than contrast with them... Then do the tops of doors, dash etc in purple, and the dash pad in cream.

Yes, but what I was saying is that I'd even think of purple carpet - to complete the theme. I'd even go further and strip out the instruments and paint the needles purple. Possibly even paint the back of the instruments white or even cream.

And I'd use the steering wheel in the top left - or a billet unit, so as not to introduce another colour. Simple is good.

Too many colours look like a mess.

Check out Herne's car. IMHO excellent use of a theme.

Congrats on plannning it though. Go to any car show and you'll see stuff that looks like three different people built the car and never talked to each other. Wrong paint colour for a car's shape, wrong wheel size/style, flared guards on a classic Holden, murals that distract from a car's lines. You've all seen the stuff I'm talking about.

I agree mate, I'm a big believer in building a car to a theme... What I suppose I want is, as you suggested, work with the factory look and enhance it a bit. I also really like bringing the exterior colour into the interior, hence the Purr Pull dash... But then the mid brown of the dash pad doesn't really work with the Purr Pull, so I want to recolour that to match the lighter colour of the seats, door trims and headlining. Then the dark brown carpet is used to contrast with both the cream and, to a lesser extent, the purple. And because it will look relatively clean for longer :D

If I get one of the above steering wheels, I will probably paint the insert Purr Pull...

Good idea re: painting the needles etc purple, I hadn't thought of that. Will definitely consider it.

Here is the colours that Knox Auto Carpets come in - http://www.knoxautoc...lours_plush.htm

Thanks for the advice guys, really gives me something to think about.

I prefer option 2... keep the interior colour out of the car, unless its done very professionaly looks crap and ricerish imo... not saying you wouldnt do it well but still ricerish !

Fair call. However if I was going ricerish I would just paint the whole interior white

I think what I like is to have to majority of the interior light creamy brown (seats, doortrims, dash pad), with a bit of Purr Pull thrown around (tops of doors, dash), with dark brown carpet. The lighter using a significantly darker colour down low gives the effect that the floor is lower/deeper, while having lighter, bright colours higher up create a feeling of space and contrast... IMO...

Don't do interior design (or any type of design for that matter...) , but I think I've got a pretty good handle on a few different concepts about using different colours/shapes etc together...

I just wanted to get a few opinions so I could order the carpet early, and a few different opinions I have received! Cheers guys.

Purple is one of those colours that is limited with contrasting colours when conveying a theme. When you get it right it looks great, get it wrong and it can look so tacky. Looks like your on the right track to getting to right.

Personally i think scrap the idea of the cream interior.

The LJ My brother and i had, we planned on going the Commodore VY Purple "phantom" exterior, Paint the steel parts of the dash the same colour, then go silver/grey and black trim with the american racing 17" "sprint master copies

Thats my idea i thought id share :spoton:

I'd probably scrap the cream interior if I could, and do something pretty similar to what you've described there. Brushed alloy, silver and grey etc etc... Problem is that the olds really want to keep the thing more original, and I thought that because the interior is in such good nick as it is, I'd keep it more or less stock to stay true to it's heritage. After all, if everyone modifies everything, there'll be nothing to show how they looked originally.

ill try take a photo of my lc interior the door trims are a similar sort of color (sandlewood) but the dash is (factory) painted to match instead of brown and i have black carpet and black/grey recaros its a good blend of classic look of the original trim and functionality of black carpet to hide dirt and newer seats to provide comfort. if i was you id just paint the dash pad/metal to match the rest of the trim in a cream color and if u want to modernise the interior just swap the seats and the steerer.
