If your going anywhere near a vehicle licencing inspection you might want to check the legalities of no outside mechanical handles to open the door. Seem to remember it had something to do with adr requirements for emergency access.

I believe cameron is correct, I don't think you can register a car in NSW with no outside door handles. I doubt an engineering certifier would allow it either.

I was curious about this myself so I've been looking at the various standards trying to find a definitive answer.

Second Edition ADRs don't specifically say you have to have exterior door locks or handles. The only mention is in ADR 2 (DOOR LATCHES AND HINGES) which says...

2.2.1.3.1 Front Doors Locks - When the locking mechanism is engaged the outside door handle or other outside latch release control shall be inoperative.

..but that doesn't technically say that you have to have an outside door handle, only that it should be inoperative when locked.

I've also looked at ADR 21 (INSTRUMENT PANELS) but that appears to only deal with glovebox locks. And ADR 25 (ANTI THEFT LOCKS) but that appears to deal only with the ignition lock. And ADR 29 (SIDE DOOR STRENGTH) doesn't seem to mention door handles at all.

I also re-read NCOP6_Section_LH_Body_and_Chassis; and

NCOP7_Section_LK_Seating_and_Occupant_Protection; and neither mention outside door handles.

And NCOP10D_LO-2_Second_Ed_ADR_Checklist says the only checks for compliance are:

ADR-2-checklist.jpg

And this one I believe only relates to the glovebox lid but I'll include it anyway:

ADR-21-checklist.jpg

Now I'm not saying this rule about the need for outside handles doesn't exist, just that I can't find it.

Can someone let me know where else to look?
