~ the only "no brainer" application for flex pipes would be in an application where the motor is east-west as its torque-reaction is on a totally different plane to the direction of the exhaust.

Do the exhaust mounts closer towards the front of the car have more freedom of movement than the rear ones? (I think at least that would be recommended!)

^ What he said! I hate flex-pipes myself, but they are sometimes a necessary evil.

However, if the front half of your system is as Heath says and has 'proper' exhaust hangers, then it would be far easier to mod the tailpipe mounts to allow some more movement rather than fit some kind of flexible joint. I mean, if you did add flex-pipes then you'd need to solid-mount the mufflers too, otherwise you have the same problem!

The problem occurs over time, if you take a piece of steel and clamp one end in a vice, then constantly move/vibrate the other end, it will eventually (and prematurely) crack.

The only time I'd use flex-pipes in this situation is if you're REALLY tight on space going over the diff and/or past the tank, then you could solid-mount the rear half of the system and, with your heat wrap and maybe some extra shielding, you could almost have it hard up against the floor.

The part on the left? I do not recognise that as a Torana part. I've never seen it before.

The part on the right? That's been broken off a front door hinge... it is the detent cam for opening the door, and a strong tension spring stretches around it (kind of like a check strap, but Toranas don't have check straps). You can kind of see it in this photo of my front door hinges:

The part on the left? I do not recognise that as a Torana part. I've never seen it before.

I was gonna guess the part on the left may be part of a column-shift linkage? IE. It bolts to the bottom of a steering column?

But that's just a guess (I don't think I've ever seen a column-shift Torana in the flesh).

Hi guy's,

could anyone help me please.

I'm after 4 of the small spacers I have highlighted in blue pen.

I know it's a long shot, but if anybody has some lying around

and could take some measurements I could make them from aluminium.

I'm fairly sure they are small tubes that are bigger one end than the other.

I remember unscrewing the gauge cluster from the dash panel, and throwing the spacers in the bin

thinking I'll be able to get a hold of these from somewhere.

How stupid do you want to be?

Regards Mando.

I cringe when I think about what I used to throw away in the 1980's. Two whole SLR/5000's went on the tip. They weren't much more than bush bombs at the time, but man I could have used some parts off them since.

Hi Jeff.  Here is a pic of the back of my fascia and I think they are the "lugs" incorporated into it.  One is threaded, which would correspond with the top one in the above pic, which would screw the cluster to the fascia, and one is just a spacer/locator, as per the bottom one, which would screw the whole lot to the body, via the speed nut.  Hope I am right as I don't have any separate spacers.  Cheers Ron

Thanks Ron,

my dash is the same as yours.

The tubes I'm thinking about must have come from somewhere else.

Everything seems to lock in together, so I must be dreaming.

Thats for all your help guy's.

No seperate spacers. The image is deceiving. Use the workshop manual.

Hello Punters,

could anyone please let me know, if the handbrake release knob on the dash of a A9X

has the symbol on it or is it the one that say's twist and pull.

The pictures I've seen have the symbol, but rare spares shows the ones with the symbol

being for earlier models.

Regards Mando.

It isn't something you see in photos because the steering wheel is usually at "straight ahead" and hides it.  I do have pics of about a dozen cars where you can see it, and it seems to be split about 50:50 between them. So the short answer is I don't know.  L34's were definitely the symbol.

My hatch is a 9/77 build and has the 'twist pull' type knob from the factory.
Probably was to much confusion with the meaning of the symbol on the other offering.

I thought symbol was LH & writing was LX but I don't think it was that clear cut.

Thanks Guys,

no one has them in stock at the moment, so I think I'll order the twist and pull and wait.

I'm almost certain the symbols came later when GMH started exporting to non-English-speaking countries.

The same thing would've happened with instrument clusters... a pic of a jerry can instead of "FUEL"... a pic of an oil can instead of "OIL"... etc..

There is some "International Standard" (ISO) that determines which symbol is used for what purpose.

Except it may be the other way around?  I have seen plenty of LH Toranas in Indo, but I don't know if I have ever seen an LX. Like I said above, all L34's have the symbol, so maybe LH's had it for export reasons, and then sometime during the LX lifecycle exports to non english countries were stopped and the "Twist and Pull" came about?  I'm only guessing here.

Rare Spares describe the handle with the symbol as being "early LX".

I'm still not any clearer.

The thing that really pisses me off, is that I bought the handle with twist and pull

about two years ago, and had it in the box on my kitchen table for about the last four months.

Now I can't find it any where.

Regards Mando.

Hi Jeff. My hatch is 11/76 and has the symbol.  I got a new one from Restocountry and according to EBay they have them in stock. Cheers Ron
