Hi Mark.  I can get you a pic but not today, but light isn't in the car, it's still attached to the trim.  I'm in the process of getting my car rewired and pretty sure the auto elec said they were the same as the roof light with button mechanism when the hatch is opened.  But I'm not exactly sure where the button is located.  I will know further next week if that helps. 

 

Mark, do you have a parts catalogue.  I just checked it and it is in the wiring harness section.  Button switch locates at the hole on the drivers side rear lower corner. Cheers Ron

I believe the SS had 2, one each side

but hijacking thread

there's a vent of some sort in the pic

my car has open holes there and thought they were speakers

any one got a better pic?

SSs had 1 like all other hatches.

Here's a pic of mine.  There is the same hole on the passenger side. I know there is only one light in my trims (driver side) and I have a suspicion the other side has/had a speaker in it but don't know if that is original.  Cheers Ron

According to the parts catalog the rear compartment lamp was standard on all 8VC & 8VD LX models, and as there were no base model hatches, that should mean ALL hatches came with a lamp in the quarter trim?

 

RPO "U80 - REAR SEAT SPEAKER" added a single rear speaker *I think* to the quarter trim on the opposite side. If you can find the tag on your Body Wiring Harness you will know what your particular vehicle left the factory with, there were four different harnesses:

 

p/n 9940929 - HARNESS ASSEMBLY - Body wiring - UG,UH,VB Exc/Rear Comp. Lamp or Rear Speaker

p/n 9940930 - HARNESS ASSEMBLY - Body wiring - All models w/Rear Comp. Lamp only

p/n 9940927 - HARNESS ASSEMBLY - Body wiring - All models w/Rear Seat Speaker only

p/n 9940928 - HARNESS ASSEMBLY - Body wiring - All models w/Rear Comp. Lamp & Rear Speaker

 

Note that the above is only for LX, the LH models also made allowance for a Power Antenna (RPO "U75 - ANTENNA - POWER - REAR") mounted in the rear quarter panel but that option was dropped for the LX.

Yes, only one courtesy light in SS, on driver's side.

It was quite a common mod back in the day to fit a second lamp on the other side, I have also seen hatches with two switches fitted...

 

 

...but I'm not sure why you would, except maybe just to fill the hole?
