Hey everyone,

Just wondering what bracket people are using for mounting their front seat belt reels to the floor/sill in their LH/LX Toranas. My LX has the reels mounted in the wrong hole (lol) and causes the front seats to not go back all they way as they hit the reel.

I've been told by seat safe to use this bracket (cut it in half and bend it accordingly):

Does this sound/look right or should I be using something else?

Hi Vinnie.  Don't think I can answer you question but am curious that you say yours are in the wrong hole.  Isn't there only one mounting point? Cheers Ron

@Cook from what I've read there are two holes. My car's currently in the shop so I can't take a look but when it's back I'll take a couple pics and post em up.

Vinnie, Unless I misread it, and I'm just going off what I sussed out in the parts catalogue, but there only shows one fixing point for the bottom bolt. Cheers Ron

I need to take a look at mine when I get it back (hopefully this weekend) as I haven't really looked at it... but most forum/threads I have read mention there are two holes.

Thanks Vinnie.  You learn something new every day (well in my case yes).  I also should have taken a better look at the parts catalogue ( and bearing in mind I am looking at the LX catalogue) as It does show a lower bolt hole on the "protrusion" for the attachment for sedan (hatch seatbelt hole is about a foot further up the pillar).  But as you can see in the catalogue, it also shows what appears to be another hole either forward or behind the protrusion, depending on which side it is meant to be.  Strange thing is, I had a look at my hatch and it has the lower hole but it is behind the "protrusion".  I've attached some photos FWIW.  I am taking a keen interest because I will be looking at this soon and I know the replacement belts I bought for my WB really don't sit well and are a bit twisted. Hopefully someone with some knowledge/experience can give you the answer. Cheers Ron

reel end goes in the rear bolt hole on the protrusion , the other end of the seat belt goes on the bolt hole forward of that (after it goes through the loop on top of the pillar ).

 

you may have them the wrong way round ?

 

hatch is different , the reel is on the pillar and the other bolt hole is rear of the protrusion not forward of the protrusion like the sedan

 

that bracket looks dodgy as fark

UCSLE, yeah that's what I thought re where reel bolts to. Yes, I agree the bracket looks a tad dodge which is why I wanted to see what everyone was using

Hi Vinnie, I am about to change my seat belts and was wondering what bracket you ended up using for the front retractable seat belt reel?

Hey LH173, I ended up taking my LX to Wilshere Automotive (in Adelaide) and they made a custom bracket that worked perfectly. I think any shop that specialises in seat belts and interior trims should be able to whip something up for you.

I just used the original mounting points in my LH. No need for any dodgy brackets. The earlier LH’s didn’t have a vertical mounting surface for the reel to mount to. What month/year is your LX?

I believe that mine is an early model (August 1974). It does not have the vertical mounting surface. I have got on to Seat Belt Solutions, they are going to supply me with some custom brackets. I see how I go with those otherwise I will look at getting something custom made.

Retractable seat belts come in a plethora of different types to suit pretty much any mounting angle possible.

 

Absolutely no need for an extra bracket to be made.

I believe if you mount the reel directly to the mount hole then the reel will be on na angle and lock up. I'm fairly certain most LXs came from factory with a bracket to mount them correctly.
My LX is 12/77

As I can ascertain all aftermarket seatbelts come with brackets/bolt holes to allow for 7/16" UNF bolts and Torana bolts are 1/2"UNC which don't fit through the bolt holes. Simple solution to ream out the holes so bolts will fit however hugh potential warranty/insurance issues. Resto Country sell a conversion kit with studs that convert accordingly to accommodate the new belt brackets.  They ware made by APV (as I understand it) but only come with fitting instructions on APV lettehead, and don't come with any certification and aren't listed on their website. I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the kit before I spend anymore money on seatbelts.  I am contemplating (not decided) sending my originals off to SBS but looking for a quick fix in the meantime.
