If you have the centre tag then it will help out
There will be T in the numbers
T is the code for a 308 the 253 code is R
eg 8VD69TH J5xxxxx is a 308 SLR5000 H being the build date code could be E F G or H
8VD69RH J5xxxxx is a 253 SLR 4.2 " " "

The body ID plate will have L31. The VIN tag (the skinny one) will have T after the 8VD69.
It will have the body panels drilled front & rear for the spoilers.

The Vin has the T but there is no V between the 8 and the D?

That is correct, there is no "V" in a VIN.
An LX SL/R 5000 should be 8D69Tx ("x" = F, G or H depending on the MY)

This all started because Apparently there were never any Antelope gold SLR 5000 ever produced only in the SLR
And once again they are wrong!

From memory on the Body tag
L20 = 202
L30 = 253
L31 = 308
L34 = Bathurst Special

Your memory is slipping then, Clint!
253's were either "L32" for high compression or "L33" for low comp ("L33" never seen in a Torana).
"L30" was the 350 Chev motor back in the HT / HG / HQ days IIRC

Ah yes I remember wondering why the order was wonky, L20 202, L32 253, L31 308

Not quite true.
L30 was the PO number for the 5-Litre (307) in HK/T.
There was no PO number for either the 327 or 350 in HK/T/G although the 350 was given the number L30 in HQ.
L34 was used in pre-production for the 327 in HK, but was not used in production because they made it unique to the GTS 327 model. Initially it was to have been an option for the Monaro GTS rather than a separate model.

Well I definitely owned one! It was in 1985, Antelope 1977 build SLR 5000, got it totally unmodified, then changed the shit out of it, cant leave things stock!
