Painted the internal side of doors red oxide.

Fitted the rubbers to boot and doors then bolted them on the body.

Boot took a fair bit of time adjusting and trialing spacers etc. The bonnet was a PITA and I was just about to rip the Rare Spares hinges out when I worked out how the get the back of bonnet down.

I found the rares instructions useless.

Made sure I fitted the window stops before doing the bodywork. Helps support the panel while blocking back.

Hi Danny, I hope so! I only clicked them in one notch so should be able to use long nose pliers to assist.

Top work Marty.
How hard are the bonnets to line up hey.
One of my hinges was a little loose so I put it in a press and it seems to work better but I am contemplating buying the resto country remakes as it needs an extra push once it closes to get the bonnet completely flat.
So bloody fiddly.
I see you using builders packers aswell great stuff

Hi Paul,

Rares hinges are made from a thicker metal therefore causing a few challenges.

I made two modifications, grinding back the back edge where it touches the drip tray (make it half thickness) and slotting the rear hole to allow more downward movement. I also had to remove washer from rear bolt to get maximum movement.

Best to fit hinge and take note of where it touches the drip tray.

Hey Marty,
Did you do any reconditioning to the heater box fan motor other than cleaning it and rezincing it?
The same with the wiper motors, is there any reconditioning of these motors that can be done to make them run like new with a bit more speed?

Hi James, Haven't been on for a while, Just cleaned the internals, greased bushs on ends and sprayed cover silver. Didn't re-zinc due to magnets attached to cover.

Full body rub down, mask-up and hi-fil again.

Once the top half is rubbed back another piece of guide tape is applied and the lower half sanded.

Thanks James.

I had a set back on the troublesome rear quarter.

While checking the lines I could see it wasn't quit right so put a bit more bog on. Then i realised the bog was getting over 2mm thick and I needed another 2mm there so I decided to grind it off and pull the guard more. You can thank Heath for making me do this, after I read he pulled his engine out and rebuilt it after noticing something minor.

What are you looking at when you have the pvc pipe down the side? Just hollow sections under it?

Hi Laurie, the pvc is used to get the line curve correct, I couldn't see the error at this stage. Not until I blocked it back and did some checks against the other side I noticed the problem. It was a case of almost there then having to take a few steps back.

Sanded and primed and I think it's pretty close now.

Sally set me up a little spot to watch Bathurst so I wouldn't get too much dust every where.

Decided to get some foam panels to insulate the garage door. Faces west and gets super hot in the arvo. Seems to make a big difference.

Hi Gene, I hope it is, but it's easy to miss something working in garage conditions.

I've been slowly progressing on the fuel tank. It's been something that when I have some bog left over or primer it gets a bit of work done to it.

Sprayed it with silver and clear and apart from the runs it came out sooo smooth. Hoping I can get this sort of finish on the car too.

I'll see if I can sand these out and polish it up otherwise I'll give it another go.

While the silver was in the gun I sprayed the mirror stem.

Hi Marty,
Bodywork coming along nicely. I don’t mind it once I get in to a rhythm.

Your tank looks a similar finish to what I did in my FB ute. I didn’t bother with boxing it. It’s only an FB after all. I found a urethane silver to go straight over Epotec that doesn’t need clear coat like most metallics do. First go I got a lot of runs but went to a 1.4 touch up gun that worked a lot better. The single application urethane had a great finish and saved me a lot of effort. I ended up doing a lot of little detail pieces with it.

If you're painting the mirror stem did you do the sunvisor mounts too?

Hi Clay, I was using a 1.4 but on my big gun. I've got a touch-up gun but that only has a .6 tip. Clearing does take more work but I look at this as practice sessions for the big dance.

Hi James, I did think of that. I painted a few sets 7 years ago for the LJ so they're already on the visors and packed away ready for install.
