This is getting exciting! Very happy with result, looks so deep and glossy.

Base coat down.

Clear goes on.

Attached File  IMG_7234.jpeg   122.75K   6 downloads

Attached File  IMG_7239.jpeg   112.55K   6 downloads

Next mission is to get into the plenum chamber. You can only spray so much in here so the bits I can't get to I used a brush. Also was a bit light on in base coat in the bonnet jam near hinge so had to do that again. Really important to check base and clear with a torch to see if you miss any thing.

Then I had to see what it looks like with a bit of hardware. Hopefully this part doesn't have to come off again. It's defiantly a dirty purple and probably why not many were sold in this colour. Really needs sunlight to set it off.

Thanks again for comments and I've also had a member ring me up with some painting tips. I appreciate this because I'm only learning off YouTube vids.  My favourite advice comes from 'Paint Society'

Time to give the room another clean. This time I cleared out all the unnecessary stuff and set up a paint mixing area. Hosed out the dust and fitted spray booth air filter mesh to all gaps and intake vent. Also used on the extractor fan.

A bit more rubbing back before the under bonnet and boot are sprayed.

I've been wanting one of these for years and finally found one in a store. American made and uses toilet roll to clean air. It's probably too late but better late than never. I already have six moisture and air cleaners in the line but these are meant to be good. I've made notes on the wall for reminders on gun set-up etc.Except i'm using 800 before final coat.

It's flick, as in if you don't trigger off. It's whatever your own painting style is though.

Correct "Flick".

I made these notes after watching some YouTube vids. I think I need to watch a few more on just metallic painting before I spray the body.

Finally finished off the dash knobs after starting them 2.5 years ago. I purchased some chrome circle stickers and was waiting until I had the clear out. They came out far better than expected.

Packed them away safe and sound.

Also cleared the bell housing after bead blasting.

The bellhousing will need some rocket red overspray around the front.

Those dash knobs came up very nice.

Hi James, Yes I was planning that, thanks for reminder. I'll also scuff it first to reduce the gloss.

Years ago I got a tip from a painter for doing metallics.

Seemed to work for me.

Put 2 or 3 steel balls in the pot. Glass marbles could work too I guess.

Give the pot a bit of a shake from time to time to get the balls rolling in the paint to keep it mixed up.

Cheers

Makes sense, I just try and swirl/shake the pot every so often. Lucky for me this has a very small metallic fleck so hopefully my lack of technique won't be too noticeable.

Tip from my guru was to do the top coats perpendicular for successive coats. Left to right then up and down. Or more practically perhaps top left to bottom right then top right to bottom left.

Painted the underside of the bonnet and boot and again looks pretty good. I did get some movement on the bitumen coating on boot lid. This could of had something to do with the wax and grease remover sprayed on it. Thats when I first noticed an issue.

It looks dark and dull in the shade but comes alive in the sun.

Attached File  IMG_7418.jpeg   116.03K   15 downloads

Noticed the metallic fleck had gathered together, I think this is from applying too much paint too quickly and pooling.

Attached File  IMG_7448.jpeg   215.77K   8 downloads

Looks so much brighter in the sun.

You may find a water based wax and grease remover kinder to the bitumen Marty. Doesn't surprise a me that the regular stuff eats in to it.

When I sprayed the grey undercoat I thought I could just give it a scuff with the grey scourer but because I'm a shit spray painter it needs to be gone over with 800. So wet sand the body again. Some areas I had to go back to 400 and work my way up to 800.

Stick to plumbing advice Dave. :spoton:

Took Grumpys advice on tapping the threads before assembly. I'm glad I did because it's a balancing act lining the bonnet screws up and to get a stuck thread would be a shit fight.

Attached File  IMG_7556.jpeg   151.52K   8 downloads

Taped up hinge area to protect while fitting.

Attached File  IMG_7557.jpeg   178.33K   7 downloads

After modifying the bonnet hinges I had them re-zinced, sprayed the springs grey and fitted.

Also got a few more bits done, I think there quality is getting better.

I like the trolley jack idea for the bonnet hinge springs. They were a challenge to stretch over my jig when I did mine.
