After rubbing back with 800 the panels get a bit of shine on them. I then noticed a couple of dips in the top guard so had to spray more hi-fill and sand again. Also started masking for final paint.

My favourite comment this year, Thanks Rob!

Time to clean out the room again getting rid of any unnecessary stuff and washing down the floor.

Started working out how i'm going to reach the roof centre.

This was too risky and I'll use the wood on crates instead.

Trying the soft edge foam masking to protect the jambs.

This front gap was a bitch to mask out, could not find any advice on google. Managed to get some foam tape in there eventually.

Boot done and a couple of interesting angles while laying under the car.

The final masking applied.

Now waiting on the perfect day. I need the temperature at 25 degrees, humidity under 50% and the wind not blowing from the west so my shity neighbour doesn't get wind of it.

Hi Marty, check your TDS for the primer you have used, not all are the same, but you may need to rescuff the primer if left for more than 6 to 7 hrs as the primer closes up/heals itself and potentially you could end up with poor bonding of the base coat.

Never new that! Thanks Dave.

That would be annoying!

The big day has arrived.

The safer option for reaching the roof.

Attached File  IMG_7623.jpeg   162.78K   5 downloads

Plenty of wipes and cleaning down for the third time.

Attached File  IMG_7634.jpeg   101.72K   5 downloads

All gaps sealed or filter material jammed in.

Attached File  IMG_7635.jpeg   155.52K   6 downloads

Plan of attack is start furtherest from the ventilation fan which means I start at the front of car. I numbered the sections I'm going to paint in order working over the bonnet down a side then over the roof before spraying rear quarters and boot. Also marked with tape on the floor the sections so I remember where to start and finish.

Ventilation tube pointed into wheel barrow with second round of filter mesh.

Taped up my baggy suit and here we go, wish me luck.

Hey Marty, by the time you read this you may have finished applying the paint.

I would start with the roof and front and rear windscreen openings, then the bonnet & nose cone, then work down one side of the car, across the boot and rear panel than back up the other side to the tip of the front guard.

Not sure whether to cry or laugh.

Certainly had some dramas with my first one being "I'm not a painter". I sprayed the base coat too heavy on the first coat and got some runs. I was about to give up this 2K dream when I realised I could rub it back in 30 mins and try again. So the couple of runs were wet sanded, dried and sprayed over. Then 2 full coats of base at a much lighter coverage. I turned the lights out and carefully inspected the base with a bright LED torch. All looked good.

Now the scary part of using a clear I'd never used before with a different mixing ratio of 3:1. My original clear was out of stock but was assured this new one would be good. Three coats went down letting them flash off in-between. I was pretty happy with the result, there were a few runs and about 8 nib dust bits and few areas of orange peel.

Then the next drama happened when I was de-masking and that tricky foam tape between front door and guard got stuck. I panicked and just kept pulling it as it came out it pulled some paint off as well. About 5mm x 30mm. Then the next day I decided to try my new de-nib tool on a 'run' which hadn't fully dried, bugger me I pulled the hole run off, 3mm x 3mm. If I just left it alone to dry i wouldn't of had these issues but the paint looks so beautiful I just had to keep touching it.

I think I can save the paint job! It's been a couple of days drying and I've starting blocking it back. That part to come later.

Anyway, enjoy the Amethyst Metallic.

Happy with my base now and getting ready for round 2 'applying the clear'

Thanks for your tips S Pack, I used the YouTube 'Paint Society' Advice and I'm happy with coverage and I got no dry areas so I think that system worked. A couple of people said I should of finish the base with some diagonal spray patterns to avoid lines, I didn't do this but think its a great idea.

Gene, It's not my first Rodeo but the first time riding this bull. The LJ was like riding a pony.

Steep learning curve with 2k, acrylic is so much more forgiving but pretty much stops there. Tip with runs, use fine body filler over the run and slightly past with a nice feather edge on the body filler then work from 240 to 1500 grit wet n dry, a razor blade also works a treat. But yes make sure it is fully cured.

Thanks for your votes of confidence guys. I think this will turn out ok.

I waited a few days before starting to block the paint down.

I rubbed back the runs with a small piece of wooden mixing stick and some 800 wet and dry wrapped tightly around it. Managed to keep it flat and not damage anything else.

Below is a run and to the left of it the run I tried to remove too early with the de-nib tool leaving missing paint down to sealer.

After the whole car was rubbed in 1200 then I decided to do the repairs on damaged bits.

Unothodox but I have nothing to lose in trying these bodgy repairs.

Soft edge masking around the run repair.

Attached File  IMG_7735.jpeg   82.68K   10 downloads

Same around door edge repair.

Attached File  IMG_7736.jpeg   132.86K   8 downloads

Boot had a few issues so decided to re-spray.

Attached File  IMG_7737.jpeg   213.49K   9 downloads

Spot patch a de-nib that was a grain of sand and went down to sealer.

Attached File  IMG_7738.jpeg   137.81K   11 downloads

Attached File  IMG_7739.jpeg   83.41K   8 downloads

Attached File  IMG_7740.jpeg   110.21K   9 downloads

Attached File  IMG_7741.jpeg   256.57K   7 downloads

Much better, no more dry areas or runs.

Attached File  IMG_7742.jpeg   169.02K   9 downloads

Cleared the whole door after getting some expert advice.

Attached File  IMG_7743.jpeg   126.99K   8 downloads

Blobbing extra clear on to build up thickness

Attached File  IMG_7745.jpeg   103.04K   9 downloads

Once this is polished I think it'll be hard to see. It is perfectly flat.

Well done. You can do a lot with a brush. Getting it flat after is the tricky bit.

I think 1 of the main points Marty was trying to hint to here, is for other people to be patient during the excitement of de masking, learn from his mistakes. We all make them from time to time, & it's good to say, this was my mistake, please make sure that you don't do this. But Marty has also shown that working together you can come up with solutions. Pretty much what our forum is about really.
