Thanks u71, nice to see more opinions, I'm happy for more members to give their opinion. John certainly builds great cars.

Like I said I think there may be a few variations from factory.

I used this GMH promotional picture as my guide. If you squint it looks like the black is behind bumper all the way to lights line. I maybe should of run the black up the bottom lip of lights but I'm not too concerned due to not being visible and very little difference between blackouts and Amethyst.

Looking pretty good so far. Blackouts are hard to see in the garage but i'm sure in the sun they'll look shmick.

Are you going to clear over base this? If not how come you used a satin black for the blackouts?
Amethyst is probably one of the more difficult colours to use for your first time with a new paint system.

Keep up the great work, but I know that you will.

Hi James, Definitely not clear over the top.

I've always wanted a way of enhancing the black-outs and stripes and if I glossed over they will be hard to see. Plus this is how they did it from factory except Acrylic.

Hi Marty,

I lurk here every day but hardly ever post.

This is probably my first useful contribution and although too late for you may be helpful to others with LC GTRs.

These we’re all taken this morning of my Adelaide 1/71 GTR. All original paint including blackouts as far as I’m aware. I’ve owned it for 35 years. Hopefully this year the resto gets started. Both the Marty and Sally reports are huge inspiration.

Cheers,

Warwick

Awesome pics Warwick, it'd be worth posting them in a new thread in the paint + panel section to make them easier to find later.

Hi Warwick, thanks for the reply, great to hear from you.

Those pics are 'Gold' literally.

I feel very happy now with my choice of black-out shapes and the satin finish.  I've had a few people advising me of different masking and finish but as I say there were variations in the factory.

Interesting that the black under GTR badge is different between sides???

Apprentice masking on one side, tradesmen on the other???

Great pics, history right there.

I never knew that there was black under the GTR side badges?...why would the factory carry out that extra operation? or was it just a way to paint the holes?

I think the left hand side has had a touch-up re-spray around the GTR Badge and they masked out the badge to paint.

Looks much better with black under badge and is how most of them came from factory.

I thought they were painted at the VAP so the sidewinder stripe continued through under the GTR badge?

I'm sure (but my memory might be failing me) another member once put up a pic of an untouched GTR with the badge removed from the Qtr panel that showed the stripe went under the badge.

Dave, I'm positive that you are correct in saying that. I believe that's it's still just the 2 solid lines running in say 1" or something similar, so that you couldn't see the start. I personally haven't seen them like that other gtr in the picture, but it may be possible.

Next stage is to apply the cavity wax. In my opinion this is one of the most important parts of a restoration. This will do more for stopping rust than using copper weld primer or applying KBS paint. All these primers and paints burn and bubble off when welding them so the only way to protect these seams and welded areas is with cavity wax using a long 360 degree spray wand.

First I wiped down and vacuumed as much dust out of the body and panels.

Attached File  IMG_8090.jpeg   219.62K   9 downloads

Attached File  IMG_8093.jpeg   199.85K   10 downloads

Starting in the doors I focused on all the areas paint doesn't get too then turned them upside down to get it to the rust prone areas.

Attached File  IMG_8083.jpeg   136.48K   12 downloads

Attached File  IMG_8085.jpeg   164.99K   9 downloads

Next the boot lid, masking out the holes to hold fluid in longer.

Attached File  IMG_8094.jpeg   187.78K   8 downloads

Then removing tape to make sure to get it flowing out the holes.

Attached File  IMG_8096.jpeg   129.26K   8 downloads

Attached File  IMG_8097.jpeg   164.79K   8 downloads

I found using compressed air to spread the wax out and leave a neater finish.

Attached File  IMG_8100.jpeg   160.99K   8 downloads

I then sprayed the internals of the 'A' 'B' 'C' pillars from floor the roof. Front and rear beavers, sills and rear quarters. The chassis rails were done when the car was on rotisserie. I will have used three tins when finished.

Attached File  IMG_8102.jpeg   184.77K   8 downloads

Now getting ready to fit the doors, hopefully for the last time.
