Thanks Aleks, It'll be good to get it out in the sun.

Marty, you are a bloody weapon.

Thanks Heath, I can always count on you to make me feel special. Cheers

Got the doors on with some help from Sally. Thankfully no damage,

I used to wonder why restorers took pictures of these areas. I know how much work goes into getting these 3 panels to line up perfectly so I'm stoked to get a great result.

Bolted on the bumper fill panel, centre support and bonnet catch. I've left the fill panel loose so I can adjust it when fitting the grill.

Great work Marty. Cavity wax is the best. But don't apply over rust, like inside original doors. Fisholene will soak in to the rust where the wax sits on top.

I think the advantage of cavity wax is that it lasts whereas fisholene really should be reapplied every few years.

Fitted the boot lock. This was tricky just like when I did the LJ I struggled to get the locking plate in.

Firstly made a new rubber gasket then struggled to work out what was stopping the locking plate going all the way in. I filed bits off the new lock to match original but still no worky. Then I realised it was the L/plate catching on the edge of the hole, a few tweaks and in it goes.

Clean the rubber bungs up and fitted.

Did a bit more paint correction rubbing out sags and peel.

Attached File  IMG_8144.jpeg   205.48K   13 downloads

Time to see some sun light on it.

Had to wait for the afternoon sun then lift the door. You can see the purple colour can look dirty/muddy in certain lights.

Attached File  IMG_8147.jpeg   167.81K   10 downloads

After the black-outs while removing the masking I again stuffed up with my mask removal. You can see the colour peeled off on the lower door ridge. I'll attempt to fix this once the weather warms up and car is almost finished. Probably just paint the ridge again.

Next is the underside of bonnet. Again rubbing out defects.

Here you can see a sag which I've rubbed flat and then compounded.

If you are pulling the colour off with the masking tape, is the paint still too soft, or is it an adhesion problem?

Are you using low tack tape?

Cheers

Rob

I think it's either soft on the edge and not using low tack tape. I've been using the same tape through-out, i didn't think to use a different one for new painted areas. All other areas ok after I slowed down and changed the angle of my tape pull.

Excellent work as ever Marty. We pulled paint off like that in a few places painting sons subi recently but it was acrylic on blocked back original urethane. Horrifying experience.

The sags you are sanding, are they in the clear?

Yes, in the clear. I was to heavy in both base and clear. I'd love to spray it again using the knowledge and experience I have now. But that's not going to happen!

The bonnet is just about ready to put away for safe keeping until engine is in. Gave it the cavity wax treatment, cleaned it up then put it in the bedroom.

Now it's time to organise the stripes. Some how I ended up with two sets of stencils, one set from Barry and another from Bat53. Thanks guys I was happy to have a spare incase I stuffed up along the way.

Firstly I had to work out how to get the correct positioning. The challenge is you can't see through the stencil to gauge where the top bodyline is. Also check that the black stripe won't drop into the door handle area.

Attached File  IMG_8296.jpeg   111.16K   11 downloads

I started my positioning at the badge. I've seen many stripes miss the badge centre.

Attached File  IMG_8295.jpeg   107.4K   9 downloads

Solution is to cut the top section off so you only have 4mm of stencil then this becomes your guide line for the body line to follow.

Attached File  IMG_8298.jpeg   131.22K   8 downloads

Using a knife and metre rule trim it back.

Attached File  IMG_8299.jpeg   130.81K   9 downloads

All done

Attached File  IMG_8302.jpeg   140.2K   8 downloads

Next post I'll show how I applied them.

Cheers

Marty

I've repositioned the car and started bringing in tools and cabinets as I get ready to re-assemble.

Attached File  IMG_8319.jpeg   186.97K   9 downloads

Tested some scrap stencil on the kitchen bench just to get a feel for how it sticks. It has a light tack - not too sticky.

Attached File  IMG_8303 (1).jpeg   156.06K   9 downloads

Stencil night was actually date night so Sally was out in the shed helping. More like pointing out problems while enjoying some wine.

Attached File  IMG_8329.jpeg   173.65K   9 downloads

Not sure how you're meant to curve a straight bit of paper? Creases appear but I cut them out and did my own masking.

Attached File  IMG_8348.jpeg   98.69K   11 downloads

Attached File  IMG_8351.jpeg   199.43K   12 downloads

I scuffed all the strip areas with grey scourer and masked the car up ready for paint.
