Dave, I have a lot of respect for you but never ever ever quote a HOLDEN bore size in millametrics.

Thanks a heap guys. A great community we have here.

Trevor, I'm going to check out Alberts block on Thursday. It looks like a 40' over 173. I presume even if it needs to go to 60' it'll still have plenty of meat left.

Otherwise I have your option.

You guys are great, my stress levels are dropping and feel like I might be getting my 'Mojo' back.

Marty

I've had a set-back with the engine. A quick re-cap.

I took a 300km round trip to purchase a fully re-cond 173 with a CD prefix. Paid $1500 and it came with receipts for about $4000.

The guy I bought it off had purchased a HR which came with this engine and he wanted to fit a bigger motor so had no need for it.

I took the engine to my engine builder to check it over, see if the cam is suitable etc. The head was low comp and needed to be high comp for my car. The block looked all good at this stage and it sat in his workshop for over a year. As I started to push for it to be finished he pulled it apart and found it was bored to 186 and had heli-coils fitted for three head bolts and they were crooked. He recommended we find another block. This motor was defiantly recond but buy a shonky builder.

He then managed to source another 173 Q motor which had standard pistons but on measuring he realised they were 179 standard so this block was no good either.

So I'm on the hunt for a Perth 173 block which hasn't been bored out too much. I think 40thou would be fine for me to go to 60thou.Not too fussed about the engine prefix but would prefer it be a pre 74 so it has the neoprene rear mains seal then I can use the good crank I have.

A bit of a kick in the guts but this is all part of playing with these old cars.

Marty

What is the problem with the 173 Q motor? Once the head goes on, the oversize can't be seen & the 173 has plenty of bore thickness to take .060" over.

Hi Warren, I'll get my engine builder to check it out. It may have a major fault that can't be see easily. I don't think 60' is a problem on a 173.

Cheers

Marty

I needed a couple of 1-7/8" tow balls to go with old trailers at my clearing sale.  When I asked for them the young fella at the shop wouldn't believe there was any other size than 50mm.

been refreshed at some stage going by the extra stamps on the pad,

The R stamp signifies that it is a repeat engine No.

I bought a tow ball and tongue off evilbay.

I think it may have been 1 7/8.

Trailer wouldnt lock on properly.

Got another ball somewhere and it was 2 inch.

Coupling wouldnt go on at all.

Theres a few different sizes floating around.

Cheers

The old man had a heap of old tow balls various sizes when we cleaned up. There was still some 2 piece tow balls, the ball bit and like a coach bolt going through it.

Yep heaps of different size tow balls growing up.
Many with removable bolt to fit to the different size ball that you could never find when needed (usually behind the seat of the truck or in the back of the ute or on the bloody tractor down the paddock)!
Kids these days have no idea how easy it is now 50mm or 50mm or oh you want the 50mm

Yeah I thought the R might be repeat indication but I assume the X was maybe engine recon marking?

Doesn't a 1 7/8'' ball plus half a tennis ball slipped over the top = a 2''?

Lets see if we can un-hi-jack this thread on Tow Balls.

Decided to do some more stupid stuff. I still have the K Frame and Diff to sand blast and because I still had a bag of garnet left I thought I'd do it myself.  Scored a free tent and set that up as my blasting room. Again this is a shit of a job but hopefully I'm done with it.

Thats the dust I was trying to see through

Used my extractor fan to help keep the dust out. I do not advise doing what I did! Pay the $200 for some one else to do it.

Then a few days later I treated it all with KBS rust blast.

Trevor, if the engine number prefix on the 173 is XQD then your engine was built for an ADR27A compliant LX/UC Torana with Automatic transmission.

Marty I don't envy you doing that blasting yourself. It's definitely 8paying someone else to do it.

My blaster said $60. I gave him a $100. Imperial Blasting Toronto NSW. Give Guy a call if you need any blasting in the Lake Macquarie area.

Mate, the tent blasting cabinet had me in stitches.

Also, after using a sand blasting cabinet with a ripped glove the other day, I'm gonna say fuck that to being in around the media hahaha.

Yeah just thought the X standing out from the other letters was possibly not factory due to the 74 cast date. Cheers
