Hi all,

Someone here would know. Can you get lower gears than 2.78 for the Banjo housing?

I've asked a couple of diff rebuilders and they haven't heard of any - does anyone know if you can aftermarket gears from overseas like the US?

Cheers TrickyD

If you actually mean ratios that are taller than 2.78:1 then I believe the answer is no.

2.60 only in Salisbury. Not sure if the UC WB VB 8 bolt Salisbury came in that ratio. If so it might be possible to build a 2:60 banjo. You’re going to need an M22 from a Tonner to launch. Or 13” rims with 40 series tyres, or muchos torque at the flywheel.

Small Salisbury is a banjo just built differently so gears/ratios are the same, as are axles, hemisphere, yoke etc. I’d be checking what ratios were in Toyotas with a banjo or maybe Gemini but from memory they are all very low ratios like Sunbird. Borg Warner built the HK/HT V8 banjo for GMH and they were only ever 2.78 and 3.08. GMH made the 6cyl ones in 3.36 to 3.9. Not sure which made them for Toyota.

Better off upgrading to a transmission with overdrive.

just guessing here...but isn't there a physical size limit to what ill fit inside? ( i.e. crown wheel)...cant remember if its 2.55 or 2.78., but I thought one of them was close to touching the housing?

Not sure, physically I don't think the sizes are hugely different between 3.55 and 2.78 - not to the point where you'll be touching the housing.

Good points there, probably too much work for the sake bringing back 200 rpm at 100 clicks - that's all I want to do really.

Yeah I could run a larger rim / tyre circumference (currently 205/15/55 - volvo rims) but I want to keep the look original because the car come with an XU1 dash and M21 box optioned from factory as is displayed on the plate.

Was just checkin if someone somewhere - even if overseas, fabricated different ratios for the housing.

Might have to accept 2200 rpm @ 100 clicks.

Just out of curiosity, how often do NOS  Banjo crown wheel and pinion set in say 3:36 come up for sale as would be keen if it did irrespective of price (within reason)

So a V8 box in an LJ 6cyl 4 door? Awesome ID plate mistake! They don’t often get them that badly wrong!
Or is it some sort of internal GMH car?
