New interior looks fantastic

Thanks mate.

It's no show car, just a nice tidy streeter  :D

I had been chasing an issue with the car that it would sometimes idle to high then settle down again after 30 seconds or so.

I pulled apart my hex type linkages, cleaned and lubricated them then refitted, same problem. I then decided to splash out and bought some of the billet type linkages from Webber, fitted those, same issue

It turns out, after much fiddling around, that the throttle spindle on the 3rd carb was done up a bit too tight so I loosened it slightly and it's now sorted.

The new linkages look much better anyway

I then noticed that after a 'spirited' drive there was a bit of oil on my driveway when I parked it up.

Turns out that the cheap shitty filter on my catch can was blocked up and causing it to blow some oil out of the dipstick.

I ditched the catch can and fitted two Aeroflow breather filters on the rocker cover instead which has fixed that problem.

Lastly I bought a synchrometer and and spent a couple of weekends learning how to balance the carbs.

It runs so much smoother now at idle and  feels much better to drive overall

It's good to hear that you are making some progress and sorting out the little problems.

The spindle nuts on the carbs don't need to be tight but do need either a locking tab or some loctite.

Did you synchronise all six throats?

Good stuff Matt. Very satisfying to get it running nice, I bet.

If you have multiple carbs then having one of these synchronising tools is a must. It's easy to do and gets easier with a bit of practice. Once you're comfortable doing it you can do it in a matter of minutes.

I bought one on eBay a long time ago and it was worth every cent.

I was lucky enough to bump in to an old school mechanic and engine builder in my area a few weeks ago (who also happens to own a genuine LJ XU1 and a two door LJ Drag Car) who now does work in his workshop at home so i took my car to him this week to go over.

I also asked him to check the jetting on my carbs and it turns out the jetting was way too rich.

I forgot to ask him what was in it but he changed them to the setup below.

Air Beeld Jet 155

Imulsion Tubes are F16 (he wants to try some different ones next time I take it in, I think he said F2's)

Main Jet is 145

Idle Jet is 55F8

Chokes are 36's

Pump Squirter is 45

The new set up has made it run much better and it now pulls and revs much harder than it did before

How's the transition from the idle circuit to the main circuit (about 2500 rpms) is there any hesitation. Both the f2 and f16 emulsion tubes are prone to cause a mid range hesitation. This may change somewhat with the weber copies compared to most models of genuine weber dcoe's. It also depends on how much manifold vacuum you have.

Was the guy who you took ir to called Mick?

I haven’t driven it far yet just home from the mechanic.

I’m going on a Torana Club run on Sunday so I’ll really see how it goes.

Yep, the mechanic is Mick Turbo, do you know him?

Are you Sydney based?

Yes I know Mick. When I first got my car I was referred to him to get it tuned. Since then I've gone very deep into learning how to do it myself as I was never happy with it due to a big hesitation and the chokes being to big for my application meaning it wasn't very good unless it was at high rpms.

I'm down near Wollongong.

Fair enough.

It doesn’t surprise me as I think he builds mostly race engines.

All I know is mine is going much better, but with 3.55’s and my driving style it’s on song most of the time

That is a name haven't in heard ages ol' Mick Turbo with tubbed & turbo v8 xu1 (blue?) very rarely took it out on street...remember when he moved workshop to Shell(?) servo in  Strathfield/Enfield then later went back to home workshop.

Back then were a few tubbed v8 xu1's & gtr on the street...Mick's lj & customer Joe of ITRIPS fame, jay watson lilac xu1 all running 9's or quicker late 90's 00's era.

Was also a few super quick 6cyl street racers back then also...was a good time to be into cars lol.

3.55 to 3.90 gears made big cammed & webered torries easier to drive without speeding everywhere..to correct speedo need to know what both speedo gears are in gearbox + tyre size then punch it into holden speedo gear calculator

The blue one is still in his garage and looks awesome

I’ve already put 3.55’s in my car to help with the cam and I changed the speedo drive to suit at the same tine

Thanks fellas.

I'm pretty happy with how it's come up.

I just wish I wasn't a tight arse and had the rear seat foam replaced as well so I wouldn't have the creases in the seat base

She's still much better than when I picked her up though

A little update.

I'm still tidying her up as time goes on and I bought some refurbished tail light surrounds

Took the car for it's rego inspection yesterday.

It was my first decent drive in it for 3 months and I'd almost forgotten how much fun it is to drive  :driving:

I also found another use for the security cameras at the warehouse
