What are your thoughts on doing this conversion with a holden 5L instead of an LS1?
Why. I'm going to make it look old school in the end.
Carbie style manifold 4 bbl throtal body air cleaner hide the coil packs and aftermaket rocker covers to look old school. i have a plan to hide the injectors too.

An awd torana with even a ford engine would be great.
With all the measuring, cutting & modifying & info you've gained , do you think it would be possible to awd the holden 304?
Can't wait to see it finished

Why would you put a Ford engine in a Holden?

Maybe if you wanted a turn key high performance 6cyl you'd use a FG-FX turbo 6 maybe? Can't think of any other reason.

I would never be able to answer this question, because personally Id wouldn't do it.
However bara conversions seem very popular these days.

Hi yel327, not 100% sure if this is for me or the 0P,
But to avoid confusion,
My comment above wasn't suggesting the op should change his engine (LS1),
& the reason i asked it is so don't have to change mine (injected5L)

Can’t wait to see this LX completed, will be unique.

The problem you will encounter is trying to get the gearbox to work correctly .

Would the extension housing and transfer case bolt onto the back of a VN-VR cable kickdown T700?

The problem you will encounter is trying to get the gearbox to work correctly .
by correctly , do mean change gears (automatic) or split the power front to rear (ABS etc) ?
I was thinking the starter motor position or relocation & exhaust would take some skill.
reason I'm interested is my project car may need some strut tower & inner guard repairs,
After seeing comy struts in your LX , i'm entertaining the idea of putting Adventra struts instead of VL.
but I want to keep it a holden 5L.
edit : Also would have to stay manual -

The gearbox is electronic gear change and the traction control is run via the abs as they never came with lsd diffs.
Holden found it destroyed the gearbox.
I used the vy adventra strut towers as they go to the inner guard so would be stronger then a stand alone tower by it's self.
Not to sure how the starter motor would go with the 304 but being a turbo pattern gearbox i would thing they would be the same. But if not easy enough to get a flex plate or torque converter to fit from 304 to vy auto.
The gearbox is basically a turbo 700 4 speed gearbox 4L60 with a transfer case added on to the back of it.

Would the extension housing and transfer case bolt onto the back of a VN-VR cable kickdown T700?
The gearbox in the adventra is basically a t700 4L60 but shorter by a couple of inches to fit the transfer case. Anything is possible if you do enough resurch and problem solving.
I know I have done a lot to get this to work in a LX hatch.

People are only useing the barra for easy HP and thats about it. Otherwise would you even piss on a ford to put out the fire when it's burning?

If you really wanted to do it there has been many of 4x4's converted to 304 Holden so you would just use a Hilux gearbox and transfer case to do it. only thing you would find is you would have to lift the car to get clearance for the front diff this way. As the adventra front diff is part of the sump and has CV shafts from there to the hubs.
I can see lots of reasons why I would never use this set up.
Mainly because the whole goal from day 1 was it had to sit at STD ride height and not be jacked up in the air like a 4x4.

Well been doing resurch on paint and primers for body work and have found a few interesting things along the way.
Have setteled on Lesonal for my hi build primer putty in 2K.
Won't be doing the panel work till after x'mass now. Might have time to finish the engine bay off before hand tho.
I know i have to sand off all the GMH black i've put on in the engine bay before i go any further there. Only put it on to get an idea of how it will look with a shine on it
I have to finish the fire wall for the commodore air con and finish off the plenum area too.
Once this is done I can finish the paint prep and paint the engine bay.
From there it will be going on the hoist and stone guard the entire underside of the car. Doing this because because I don't believe in painting a show finish on the underside of a car to drive on the road. It will be wrecked in no time flat. Will only ever end in tears on a road driven car.

I would even be tempted to look into the stuff they spray on ute trays now. Mine was done five or six years ago now and has spent this time with excavator buckets, tool boxes, and sheep doing their business on it, and it is still as good as the day it was applied.

I've heard it called rhino liner in the states, but is there a particular brand? We will be doing our underside this summer before it comes off the rotisserie. I rebuilt the diff in my falcon ute and sprayed it with a stone guard type of aerosol from autobahn, probably was a motorspray brand. Came up really nice and seems to be lasting alright.I would even be tempted to look into the stuff they spray on ute trays now. This is a rather ambitious project to say the least.

The stuff on my ute is very tough, and very thick. Probably close to an 8th of an inch. You couldn't spray it over any nuts, bolts or screws, so only onto a bare floor. Even then you might need to drill out some holes again. The panel beater who did the job isn't at work today so I can't help with a brand name until Monday.

It certainly is. I know Glenn has done this sort of conversion with a awd skyline. But no challenge in that for me as the wheel base and track are within mm of the torana.I've heard it called rhino liner in the states, but is there a particular brand? The adventra wheel track and wheel base is nowhere near the torana. So there lies the challenge.

VFII SS Ute.
GQ 4.8 rolling chassis, everything from transfer case thought to diffs and steering.
Use a Marks 4x4 conversion for the LS3 and 6L80E to Patrol transfer case, and their engine mounts.
Remove the rear diff and suspension from the VF.
Drop VF body onto Patrol chassis.
Everything from fuel to radiator remains in the VF so most plugs or connects back together. Fabrication required:
VF column to Patrol power steering box plus fluid lines.
VF electric handbrake to operate Patrol handbrakes.
Patrol ABS sensors to drive VF ECU.
Speedo correction in ECU, won’t work in 4L I know but no bother.
VF brakes driving Patrol calipers.
Hardest thing I think - getting the transfer case lever to work without ruining the SS console.
I’ve spoken to an Engineer about it, becomes a re-bodied Patrol so keeps the Patrol GCM, GVW etc.
I looked at an AWD chassis like a 100 Series to have less need for a transfer case stick but the Patrol chassis and track are perfect for a VF Ute. 100 Series is perfect for a VF wagon or sedan.
