No, he clipped a tyre barrier which broke the steering and turned hard right into the trees.

Although Dick never remembered it, Brock (who was next on track) stopped and gave Johnson a lift back to the pits.

That was one hell of a crash. I remember thinking Dick was dead when I watched it.
Yeah, me too.
No window nets etc...would have been pretty easy to loose an arm too.

I was at the circuit in the camping area behind the pits that day.
Was probably having a drink in the tavern watching it all happen.
As it unfolded, there was a deathly silence.
Everyone stopped doing what they were doing and lots held their breath until they saw that Dick was okay.
It was an event I will remember always.
Got my own photos of the car once it was brought back down to the pit area.
I then watched as the TAFE guys did their best to make a new GreensTuff and turn a Commodore into a Motorcraft stickered Bengigo car.
That was an all nighter watched by lots in the pit area.
Cheers

Brock took Jonhson back to the pits in 05 after the crash (as he was on his warmup lap when Jonhson crashed .Dick couldn't remember how he got back to the pits when asked)
Getting 17 back for the race required 2 cars to be re-painted.
The Bendigo Falcon was to become the Greens Tuff.Johnsons team had to find a car for the drivers
of the Bendigo Car which I think was the Lawrence Commodore so it had to be painted as well.
Paint of Greens Tuff was still wet when being pushed onto the grid.

The spare STP car was used to get Harris back into the race.
The deal was struck in the Tavern behind the pits on how to get Dick back in the game.
Only time I have seen Motorcraft decals on a Holden.
I watched the TAFE crew most of the night repainting the cars.
It was said the TAFE kids slept for the majority of the race as they had been working without much rest all weekend.
Didnt take pics of the work during the night unfortunately.
Cheers
