Best simple street combo for a B cast style headed 308 is flat tops and a cam with about 230 @ 50 duration. So about a Crane 286. A Performer manifold, 650 holley or well set up Quady, and a good exhaust with exctractors. You are looking at around 300hp and it will be reliable and reasonably economical and enough power to have a bit of fun with.
I had this combo in the old LX as my daily driver for ten years. Excellent street combo that I drove in heavy city traffic and long highway trips without missing a beat.
While a hydraulic roller is a very nice thing it’s not necessary for what you want and offers no real advantage for its extra cost over a good old hydraulic flat tappet cam for your application.

The 286 has a very good reputation for a street cam. Did you see this thread -

So Rexy what trans/stall did you have behind this combo?

Initially had a steel case celica box (fantastic shift feel) followed by a supra 5 speed.
Rear end was initially a banjo. This motor broke a 3.08 crown wheel and pinion and then a couple of axles. After trialling some 3.36 banjo gears I bit the bullet and put a 3.5 LSD nine inch in it.
Your auto will be easier on the rear end. If you like cruising a relatively small converter should be ok.
