Hi guys, as the title suggests I’m after ideas or even first hand practices of how best to secure my project car at home.

As Iv been off work during lockdown(Vic) I’ve been out in the garage working on it heaps lately. I have my car in my double garage that’s connected to the side of my house that’s also got 2x off road buggies, 3x dirt bikes, engine’s & gearboxes etc...

So whenever I have the garage door opened & someone looks in & god forbid actually notices something in there says “Nice car/bike/buggy” ..... I shit myself & take a mental note of them & freak out for the next week thinking they’re coming back any day for it or tell one of their dodgy mates down the pub....

Any suggestions apart from the obvious “well don’t open the door”.

I was thinking bollards or a chain that bolts to the floor & goes around the diff.

CCTV security cameras are a “must have” up here. That’s a good start. Access via your phone and sends a notification or email at the first sign of movement.

• The Arlo Pro 3 cameras are pretty reasonable
• Use another car to block access
• Retractable / fold up bollard with sheathed padlock
• Don't post your car on facebook where it can go public
• Don't post online photos of your stuff using your phone / location on - when posted the images usually contain GPS info
• Don't give your real address at any car meets, events with strangers etc

Also, Shannons Insurance advise using/fitting gps tracking device to vehicles.

If your open garage/shed is exposed to the passer by in the street, or even just you driving in and out of your own property, There will always be someone somewhere mentioning what nice things they saw.

The car following you home too, who is that?

Cover your toys up with car covers, blankets or old sheets so people can't see anything you don't want them to see.

Shannons actually gave me a discount on our insurance policy for having the cameras. Normally they only offer a discount if you have an alarm system that is 3rd party monitored. But I said what’s the point in that... by the time I find out about something it’s probably too late. Where as the cameras send an alert notification when it senses a heat source & movement to my phone straight away. Email me a still image photo of what’s been captured and then I can view in real time on my phone remotely what’s going on across 8 CCTV cameras. I said surely that’s more beneficial than an alarm system that no one will take any notice of... the dude on the phone agreed.

I feel it depends on the type of car you own. If you own the high end cars (A9X etc) then the crook who's going to have a go at stealing that car GENERALLY  has done his homework and will be familiar (like we are) with all the common/popular security measures car enthusiasts use. He is likely to be older and have a fair idea how he intends off loading it. He's not likely to be a joy rider. I reckon you need a few measures all incorporated together which incorporate technology as well as good old school stuff (Bollards/heavy chain etc) to deter the punks. Its very difficult these days to get away with thieving a high end classic car as its generally frowned upon even amongst societies bottom dwellers. Technology is our friend these days but generally the car is already gone by the time its useful and that doesn't give me much comfort.

Most people seem to rely on getting the car started and driving it away. Don’t leave your projects in running condition if they are occasional drivers.

 

And offer to shoot strangers you don’t like the look of....

Safe for car keys,garage remotes etc...most high end cars stolen they break into house grab keys from kitchen or even bedroom while ownes sleep.

 

As for cctv,bollards,gps tracker etc the harder you make it for them the better the chances thewy won't attempt it or simply give up.

Yeah luckily we have those groups in Cairns also. We need all the help we can get as the Qld Justice System is broken. The Police do a good job catching them, but the Judges and the courts let the community down.

Sure thing champ, Silly me for asking for car help/information on a car forum. I don’t have a property big enough to build a shed out the back anymore so my double garage is the only option. You understand that to use a garage for ANY OTHER purpose than work on the car or store the car will require the door to be in the open position??? Next time I’ll post pics of what I have, with my address, with as much detail as I can all over Facebook.

Anyway thanks for all the helpful insight into some of the measures other car enthusiasts are implementing.

I’ll be looking at two bollards for a start & possibly a few other of the ideas you guys have thrown up.

Anyone have any knowledge on a good bollard system?

My advice is to have 2 different types of detection/protection systems.

One which is highly visible, and the other one concealed as much as possible.

Alarms as such arent that much of a deterrent these days.

If one is going off, someone nearby is likely to just complain about the alarm on a local Facebook page, without investigating it.

I found that even fake alarm systems work as well as a full on system.

If they see the alarm box those that dont like them move to another target.

Those that dont care go for it regardless.

 

Making sure that a hook cant be pushed under your garage door will help.

Had a heap of Volunteer Fire stations broken into this way.

Slide the hook under the door, turn it 90 degrees or so and pull on it with their vehicle.

The door folds up in the middle and makes a space big enough to crawl through.

 

Ultimately good insurance is your only fall back position if someone really wants the car.

They will break in, wake you up with a gun to your head and ask for the keys.

Only a fool would refuse.

 

I have set up systems that probably would get me in trouble if the thief lived the full course of the protection.

But that wasnt likely. Shotguns, 1000s of acres and a couple of excavators formed part of the system.
