Hi,

Random question.

Just received  renewal for  my 2015 factory built box trailer.  Tare 310, GVM 750.

Manufactured in 2015 and I bought it new.

 

For the first time, it says " Inspection Required".?

 

A search of google reveals a 2017 RMS Roadshow doco that says - 

Q: When will Roads and Maritime start requiring box trailers under 250kg to be
inspected?
A: Transport for NSW makes this policy. Your question has been passed on, just that to the
relevant area within Transport for NSW for their consideration.

 

I wonder when this changed?

 

I accept that there are total basket case trailers wobbling around, due to slack maint. &  owners not ever needing to present them for checking, but just wondered when it changed? I guess as mine was < 5 y.o. it wasn't required until 2021?

Mine has been inspected every year since I upgraded it to 1540kg ATM and fitted electric brakes. But that was about 4 years ago.

You've sot of answered your own question.

Annual inspections are not required for box trailers under 250 kg, yours is 310 kg.

Also most vehicles under 5 years of age don't require annual rego inspection either. Yours has now turned 5 !!

I for one, don't agree with the 250 kg cut-off. Have you seen how bad the average domestic box trailer is.

Trailer rego inspection fee (without trailer brakes) is only $21.

Thanks Dr T....yeah, no dramas with the fee or the principle, I just never heard of the  change.  Prob.  a good one regardless, some of the trailers you see at the dump unloading stuff, should not be allowed back out!

You're forgetting that NSW is the last state that even has yearly inspections at all!

 

I think they've been clamping down on it now but did you ever notice that most semi trailers used to be registered in SA? Over there you just pays your money over the internet every year and the trailer doesn't even need to be in the state.

A friend of mine years ago had all of his trucks with SA rego.

Said that there, a trailer was considered as just a trailer and cost bugger all.

About the same as a box trailer from memory.

He had a mate down there and used his address as a business address so it was legit. Kind of.

Saved him thousands each year.

Nothing like that over here Col you  just pay your trailer rego every year approx $45 away you go 

Cant remember what mines rated at but had well over a ton on it once full of wet yellow sand snapped 2 trailer wheel studs 

To much weight more than likely  :D

Not about you, it is about the idiots that don’t. I’ve seen cars coming into wreckers for over 30 years, and more often than not anything with current rego that is absolutely r00ted by rust is interstate rego. There is no way any of them would have gotten that bad in NSW since the last inspection. Often they had zero tread, totally flogged brakes and suspension yet were still regoed outside of NSW. I’d prefer interstate vehicles to not be allowed into NSW without a NSW rego

Byron maybe 25 years ago i would say yes lots of shitboxes were driving on the road but nowadays its to expensive to fix 20 year old  cars when they breakdown they are scrapped 

Hell I’ve seen 15 year old cars taken to sims metal 

Sometimes the cost of an engine or works is worth more than the car depending on make and model

That is true, but some people are stupid or dumb or don’t care. If they aren’t forced into fixing stuff they won’t, and annual inspections make them do it. My mate bought a VQ Statesman with HBD engine recently for $900 or thereabouts. Reason was it didn’t pass the annual rego inspection. It was a good car with faded paint but most of its suspension rubbers were gone and the brakes were shagged. Old bloke would have kept driving it other than the need for rego inspection. Would have been terrible to drive and dangerous.

Yes. Annual inspections fixes most of it. There are enough dumb?!ks driving around unlic/unreg high on whatever without having to worry about dangerous cars that aren’t fit to be on the road.

The "Government" doesn't make any money out of rego inspections.

 

The cost is $41 for cars & that covers the labour charge of the rego inspector.

 

The annual pink slip is not a full roadworthy like a Blue slip (or RWC) it is basically just a safety inspection.

 

Any major rust, bald tyres, lights not working, major oil or exhaust leaks are the main target. Many ADR items are not even checked. What is so bad about that ?

WA mechanics must be backward? Sure there are always bad eggs but they soon get found out. I still don’t see the problem? I get pink slips for both the Hilux and the Lexus when they get serviced. Trailers and bike have to go in but small price to pay to keep the morons off the road. No different to random breath and drug testing as far as I’m concerned, responsible people have to have a slight inconvenience to stop the dick heads.

As I said the annual pink slip is not the same level as a RWC, which is I assume your DPI ? is. The annual pink slip is basically a safety check & as yel327 has said is quite often done when you get your car serviced.

Would be interesting to see some data of "yearly inspections" type States  V.s. Non inspection states ( thinking NSW V QLD?)

 

i.e. are there lots of shitbox /bald tyre type crashes in one and not the other...or is that data not collected/ or not even seen as the Police don't attend all the smaller prangs these days.

They still have to be registered with the MTA Byron
