Nothing looks the same after 40 to 50 years. Yes zinc plating dulls with time. I will probably coat mine, as I'd like to keep the car looking like it had never been driven of the showroom floor much. But that's just my preference.

I have over a hundred photos of brand new Toranas, and not one shows the scuff plates.

This one is unrestored, and it is hard to believe that it was ever bright.

Yes thats how mine looked but not as rusted, I am sure mine are the way they came, I have had the garaged for over 20yrs and my mother in law cant recall the scuff plates ever being removed, at a guess mine are painted with a silver paint.

Brian, these must be painted or have some other type of decorative coating applied. Electrolytic zinc plating simply does not peel.

I had an old set zinc coated the other day. I don't think they look too bad. Bright, but not too bright.

I also found this New Old Stock one for sale.  Certainly not painted.

I should have mentioned that I had mine done at Vivid in Maddington. 0449 714 250  Shaun does a great job and also does gold zinc and anodising.  He has done all of the nuts bolts and washers for the L34.

When mine were newly zinc plated they almost looked like chrome. They have dulled off over time.

I think it was 160 bucks to do the four of mine, but they were nice and clean and had the rust wire brushed off, so I would assume it would be more if he ha to clean them up.

I asked him to not make them too bright. maybe that was a mistake, but we will see.

I have also now seen enough painted scuff plates to believe that at least the S model came with them.

Right hand one has been sanded back to zinc.

And just to collate what has been said about chrome ones in other threads in here...(The UC Parts book has chrome ones I believe)

One thread on chrome plates on SLR's came up with 7 in one answer. Personally, I have seen heaps, but I guess heaps of people must have had them done later in the cars lifetime.

According to the parts catalogues, all LH & LX as well as UC Torana S only had what they called "Cadmuim Plated" scuff plates, while all other UCs had "Chrome Plated" scuff plates.

The Cad plated ones had the same part numbers for all those series.

So it seems if your LH or LX has chrome plated ones then the previous owner probably had them done.

I had mine cad played to start with. But after about 3 months in storage they went funny. Not many places do cad plating these days. So I had them zinc plated.

I have just dropped my scuff plates off to the powder coaters. Going for a tuff satin black finish. Will post pictures when I get them back next week.

Just got back my scuff plates from the powder coaters. I went with a heavy duty satin finish that they use on 4x4s. It'd meant to be super tough.Attached File  20240415_161450.jpg   68.38K   7 downloadsAttached File  20240415_161328.jpg   192.86K   4 downloadsAttached File  20240415_161318.jpg   251.58K   4 downloadsAttached File  20240415_161506.jpg   62.06K   4 downloads

I reckon that looks great, especially against the white.
