I just got back from there. It is a 1967 327 275hp powerglide engine (so small journal) and intake to suit, but the fuelie heads are gone. It has 1972-ish 76cc heads on it, basically as fitted to a HQ. Same ports and valves as a fuelie just 76cc chambers rather than 64cc. No good for that engine as it would be about 8.5:1 compression - exactly the same basic engine as a 2nd type GTS327 engine just all different casting numbers. Would be a good engine to hone and put new rings and bearings in but needs better heads.
I bought the 307 he had advertised.

Still don't know If I can fit it, Better try to find the right engineer first.

Would it be worth buying or would you have bought it already.
How much would good used heads (fuelies) go for ?

You’ll buy 462 or 291 or 186 fuelies for less than $500, I picked up some 292’s for $200, but 041’s will cost you $1000’s as GTS350M owners want them. Not worth the hassle today, by the time you reco them with new valves, springs and hardened seats you’ll be up for $1000 plus the heads cost. Best to buy aftermarket alloys, less than $2000 for a pair ready to go that would be perfect for a 327:

BTW, that 327 can be made into a 302 easily and cheaply. Just need a 283 crankshaft. Plus rebuild of course with new pistons with the 302 pin height.

Would you get away with just saying 302 cubes or would engine numbers say it's 327 block?

The engine number tells you what it was used for, this was HF from memory (VxxxxHF) where the xxxx is the MM/DD of assembly which is 275hp 327 Powerglide 1966-67. Plus it had a partial VIN on it which identifies the car it was from.
I don't think that would stop you working with an Engineer and showing him it was built as a 302 though. People do it all the time with 386, 660, 388, 010 etc large journal blocks - they can be 302, 327, or 350 or stroked to 377.

You’d be far better off buying a good running one of the right capacity to please your Engineer. One will turn up. There is always a steady stream of good 283’s as people pull them out of imported Chevys and upgrade to bigger. Rebuilding one does add up, especially if you can’t do it yourself.

I could of bought a 307 with powerglide in better condition out of a HT for $2000. Makes this 283 a pricey deal.

Unless I find an engine next door I give up, I don't even have a tow bar.
