Just good cruising torque, smooth idle Bruce. I would guess the comp is around as above, 8:1 static. Bit more lift than the old one. Tad less duration. Hmm, the current head should be OK with that....

Doesn't sound too drastic to me Clay. But I have no idea what red 6's work like with compression and octane. You are on the right Forum though for the answers!

Rough figures based on the factory chamber volumes,
I get:
Open
Static 8.0 Dynamic 7.7

Closed
Static 8.9 Dynamic 8.5

I would think 8.5:1 dynamic would be OK on 91 or certainly 94. I suppose the fuel pump diaphragm and plastic floats in the SUs would handle E10 ok?
If so I might see about getting the small chamber head smikked up a bit.

Clay, I reckon you'll be fine running 91 with 8.5:1 compression. Back in the later 80's when Ron Richards rebuilt my 202 he set the compression at 9.9:1 because LRP (Lead Replacement Petrol) was only 96 octane.

To run compression higher than than 10.1:1 he said I would need to add octane booster to the fuel and I didn't want to have to bother with that.

I've got the timing set to run on 98 but I have run 95 in the 202 without any hint of pinging.

You would want to be careful running E10 in an older car that has a fuel tank and carburettor/s vented to atmosphere. E10 is hygroscopic.

Thanks Dave. Makes sense, alcohol being hygroscopic. I'm always using metho to dry bare metal. It absorbs any water and the whole lot evaporates.

How did he describe the way that cam would operate powerwise , Clay?
It’s a bit smaller than the one you had in there
What is your compression as it sits now?
What number did he recommend?
Did you speak to any of the other guys for a second or third opinion?
Sorry, that’s 4 questions

Quite right Bruce, bit less duration, bit more lift. The head can stay on there for the present. I do need to get some stiffer pushrods though.

Sounds good
The smaller duration and the resulting smaller overlap
would have to increase your cranking and lower rpm band
compression numbers anyway over what you had before.

Hopefully you’ll end up with an even snappier and more responsive motor
in the rev range you want to use

Thanks mate. I just hope all that stray metal hasn’t damaged anything inside. When I get over this horrible flu I’ll pull it outs d pop the caps off. I can’t assess the compression without the camshaft installed, which is a bit of a catch 22. Maybe a form of leak down test I can perform with a pneumatic valve retainer fitting?

Got some stiffer pushrods. I hope they are okay. They weigh in at around 61 grams each, 1.33 grams heavier than the stockies, which isn’t much really.

I got the invoice for my new cam, but still not the energy to hoik the donk.

I've been casting around looking for a cylinder pressurisation fitting to hold the valves in place while I change the springs, but all th ones I've seen don't have enough reach to start the thread in the plug hole.

I smashed the porcelain out of an old plug and glued a bit of tube in the hole for the air hose

Thanks Bruce, yep. Glen did similar. I can borrow his. Just find it hard to believe there isn’t something useful on the market somewhere.

Bloody flu has left me with this cough keeping me awake from the early hours.

Had to do the same thing for cheap compression tester, too.
Came with 4 threaded adaptors, not one of them reached the threads in the head

Thought of adapting the comp tester hose. It has a straight cylinder style pneumatic coupling I’m not familiar with.

Sounds like you are having fun with the flu.

Ive been using senega and ammonia mixture for years and it usually keeps the flu away, but if I use it too late, I rarely have more than 2 days crook.

It is a cheap cough medicine available at every chemist.

It tastes like crap, but tit works

Cheers

Rob

Only excuse left is I’m still sick as a dog. Cam and lifters turned up, custom ground and radiuses by Jonny Marshal after ordering last Monday morning. Not bad.

Th3 word on the flywheel @nd clutch is that being billet chromoly it will be perfectly balanced, and the clutch at worst needs to have shouldered bolts to centre correctly. I don’t know if anyone has heard of these?

Standard. The shoulder as you call it is the shank of the bolt which doubles as a dowel.

The std bolts attaching the pressure plate to the flywheel are "shouldered" bolts.

Finally, I worked up the energy to get under the car and disconnect the drive shaft, etc. Crank journals and cam bearings are fine thankfully though I haven't opened up the big ends yet. May as well replace the bearings while it is apart. They look ok apart from this one.e9ebb6700d364b19b55c6bd880cae17b.jpg

Long story short, the lifter failure has turned into a full rebuild.

Installing new main bearings, all clearances came up around 0.001 - 0.0015", with the notable exception of the rear main which is lucky to be 0.004".e8235a4fd5b9940aab83b0a85023e08c.jpgI'm not all that surprised, as this rear bearing shell is virtually an interference fit for end float. I'm contemplating taking to the sides with some emery paper. Anyone else experienced this issue?
