Would the wet pump gears have enough suck to unplug the Vaseline in the end of the pickup tube and start pulling oil?
Would that plug of vaso need to get hot and soften up?
Would be a bastard if it didn’t unblock after getting the whole thing re-installed for starting up
I am not sure wether to be worried for you on that one or not
I did the Vaseline on the gears trick, also used an oil can to squirt as much in through the oil pressure sender
which I figured would run down into the out flowing half of the pump, wetting them more at least.
I think the teeth going backwards as they rotate might pull that oil in behind themselves as well.
Thought attempting to fill up the main gallery was a good idea, too, but it probably just went past the lifters and down
And put some more into the holes where the filter goes, but that might have just drained downwards anyway.
May have been unnecessary, but was just a why the hell not idea and it couldn’t hurt anything
Filled the filter, too.
No problems, pressure straight away

That's were SBC and BBC are awesome. You pull the dizzy out and replace with a battery drill driven setup that drives the oil pump. Get full oil pressure, replace the dizzy and start it.

Thanks for the advice fellas. It's only the cam I'm really concerned about, and it has been both coated with dry molybdenum spray, and the lifters coated in lube. After several revolutions by hand the cam retains a sticky film. I flowed oil through the pump and will unplug the pick-up tube. I'll fill up the filter and crank over plugs out to see the lifters oiling before fire up. Need some run in oil.

After about 6 revolutions by hand, upside down with a funnel in the pick-up inlet to prime the pump, all the pushrods had rotated by 90 degrees. Happy days.

Another trick I was told to get instant oil pressure is to pressurise the sump with compressed air through the dipstick tube.

I use an old fire extinguisher, a few litres of oil in the sump, the remainder in the extinguisher, pressurise the extinguisher, connect to the oil sender fitting, open the valve on the extinguisher, hit the starter, instant oil pressure. You can use any type of small pressure vessel that you may have laying around.

Bedded in new cam today. Set lash.2e454b1bccdc5920bcd920f85308a3b6.jpg3d9ed334592495f5d8ba199a60c2f307.jpgBorrowed mates fancy timing light, dialed in 32 degrees and set at 2000rpm while bedding the cam. Gearbox is spewing oil like last time I filled it up.

You might have to swap out the input shaft and the cover that the throw out slides on.

Leaked out no more than 100ml and appears to have stopped, as it did last time. I speculate it is just an idiosyncrasy of the early box with no front seal. I’m in no hurry to pull the driveline out now. I just want to get out on the road and run it in. I spent the morning fitting the rocker cover, grille etcetera. Still got the indicators, bonnet and a few bits to go.

Yeah they changed the box design as it used to leak out and ruin clutches. Plus make a stinky mess!

Bedded in the new rings today and all seems good. Some valve bounce above 4000 due to the soft springs so basically just on and off throttle in second most of the time, up a few hills and full throttle bursts, limiting the revs to 4000.d437b771542a0bacea26af6da1ae1427.jpgI fitted a PCV running off the balance rail over the centre port. I suppose the next job will be to change the springs, however I'm considering changing out the head. But I think I will just enjoy having it back on the road for a while.

Cheers Bruce. Even this crappy start to summer is a bit warm for stout, well in my observation at least. Sparkling ale it is. Good to be back on the road.

Hopefully that will be it, with nothing much next oil change.

Dropped a 161 head in to Lonsdale Engines for a freshen up. Nothing special. Blend ports, un-shroud and larger exhaust valves. Fingers crossed for crack test.

Just out of interest Clay, why larger exhaust valves? Normally its intakes you make bigger, or are red 6's that deficient in the exhaust?

It is not a big cam Byron, and as you can see from these pics they are pretty small compared to standard inlets.db4c3dc7c9bd10c1f634a2887c954dd6.jpga2747b72e21133294ee23624c61e061c.jpg Idea with the inlets is to try and keep the velocity up. Just open up the short turns and blend to gasket edge. Just doing what is necessary to suit the cam apparently. I'm just following their recommendation really.

Cool. I was only going by what I know for SBC's. They have 1.72" intake and 1.5" exhaust for small engine, and low rpm applications. All they did was changed to 1.94" intakes and larger ports when performance was required, still kept the 1.5" exhaust valves. The only time they put larger exhaust valves in they only went to 1.6" along with an increase to 2.02" intakes. And that was only for the big solid cam, 325hp+ engines.

Here is the freshened head. Guess I will port match the inlet manifold. I don't know about the cast headers. I've got the number for a guy at Seaford that Furey the head man recommended to mod the dissy. All over the SUs apparently.19bc3f41457cf61f786bef51ac0b388c.jpgd2f87b7adc0fe93ef2b54b084d2b5535.jpg1ec6c0d9fba42f42b5e9cd668d62c22f.jpgff9e17f21b3ba8a7a34629d3ef307c01.jpg81eee5f11d853c0fe4b8b836e68c0d34.jpgb8a94c0ccdca4b194502305035388e62.jpg5baf934125802b1e8ef3d4295f34ba5f.jpg
