The high energy spark from the electronic dizzy should easily handle a .060 plug gap

Thanks Bruce and Dave. I was running NGK 5s previously. When I went for the dyno the tuner Davor advised me to put 6s in. Would have been 10,000km ago and no issue until recently.

Good detective work to track that down Clay.

The beauty of the old glass bowl pumps, I could see it was low. There were no apparent leaks or breakages when I took it off in the Main Street of Hahndorf Sunday morning. When I took it off again home in the shed all the fuel ran out the in pipe. Pretty obvious really. Anyway, fingers crossed as always.

Problems with ignition breakdown have continued to plague the 179 in my ute. Fuel system seems to be okay, as do cap and rotor. I fitted new NGK BP6EY (V notch) plugs, gapped to 0.040”. It appeared that the coil had failed, so I replaced it with a Bosch (made in China) HEI original style oil filled one, rated at 45kV.

I blocked off the vacuum advance and set the static advance to 9 degrees. Timing light shows 34 degrees at 3k rpm.

Intermittent flat spot down low continued and got worse, combining with pinging and backfiring and occasionally running backwards. Eventually it would not start and appeared to have no spark. After a rest it started and ran well enough to manoeuvre it out of the way and eventually in to the shed.

This morning I replaced the ignition module with a new genuine Bosch item, not forgetting to apply fresh silicon heat transfer grease. I went for a short run up a steep hill and all seems good. I will unblock the vacuum advance and do some more driving, before advancing the timing toward 14 degrees.

Early days, but now I am speculating that it was the module all along. It is not long since I got the distributor rebuilt by scorcher. The module I removed was the original Bosch factory item. I suspect they didn’t see anything wrong with it at the time as the problem was intermittent. I wonder if there is a simple method to test these. Early days, and still a chance of the problem reoccurring yet, but fingers crossed.

I drove up to Lonsdale this morning after reconnecting vac advance and reset initial timing to 14 degrees, which makes a huge improvement in pickup from idle. Car did not miss a beat.

I spoke to Performance Ignition in Nunawading. They thought my description of the problems didn’t indicate module failure, more like coil but conceded it may have been. Weren’t keen on the coil I have installed. I will do some research but open to suggestions.

Also tested resistance from inside the cap to end terminals of leads. In the range 400-800 Ohms. Anything less than 1k is considered good and up to 4K Ohms acceptable.

Happy days

Gday Clay
Good news that you found a potential culprit
might finally get it all sorted out.
Tha rebuilding distributor page done by fuzzypumper has
a bit about testing hei modules and the target multimeter readings
coils too, I think

The old coil I replaced on the other hand, has 6k Ohms across the HV circuit but only about 0.5 Ohms across the +/-.

You've already got the scorcher dissy, so have probably already talked to them. But when I recently called them and asked about coils, they said they were unhappy with the build quality of all coils on the market, so started having their own made. I was told they only recommend the scorcher coils and the MSD Blaster coils. Was the coil you replaced one of scorcher's?

For what its worth, I've also had huge issues with my Triple SU recently. Did the Hardass 1000 drag and drive event. Had this intermittent issue where it would backfire constantly out the carbs with next to no power, drove me absolutely nuts and still havent solved it  :furious:

Yes, they discounted the quality of the Chinese Bosch coil I am using but we didn’t get to the stage of them recommending anything else. The one I am using appears to test favourably based on the process described in fuzzy-pumper’s blurb, and the thing appears to be running well since I replaced the module. If I have any more issues I will look into getting one of their coils as the next step.
