Clay - Yep, valve stems seals.... x12
Hopefully, if the engine shop put a head together for you, they should have fitted some new ones, from their stock.

Otherwise... if you have not fitted any, having those left overs from the engine gasket kit, it will be a smoky engine....

They can be fitted with the head left on the engine.
Just dont drop a valve into the cylinder doing it.

Ive used regulated air pressue to keep valves up.

Or read others using a coil of rope, through the sparkplug hole, then gently rotate the piston up to push the rope up to hold valves up. Leave the tail of rope outside the plug hole for removal afterwards.

Or buy a valve spring compressor that works with the head on. Like this:

Regardless of the type of spring compressor employed, the valves still need to be prevented from dropping out of the guides whilst the collets are removed.

That’s easy though, especially if the manifolds are off. Normally TDC will stop them falling but long nose pliers with soft tips or even fingers up the ports. I’ve normally done it on a V8 when changing a cam so the intake is off. I’ve seen small pencil magnets used too.

Thanks fellas, yeh it’s academic I think but I’ll check with the shop tomorrow. It’s a generic kit and comes with two exhaust flange gaskets also, which will be handy later when I fit the X2 headers. Gasket for the dizzy ffs, and even sump plug gasket.

No one volunteered any suggestions for running in oil. A mate swears by Penzoil running in oil and crow duracam.

Non friction modified mineral oil and zinc additive. This is what you should be using at least to run in, but not if running cats per modern stuff.2cd82428a7195bec345dcc550864597e.jpgb89e924363e6ad4a6217c709e2cd9272.jpg

Flywheel bolts.

Spoke to Furey at Lonsdale Engines about the rod bolts and reassured will be all good. Not long now.4429ac6b388bd5ba80d58000dab7939e.jpg338fd7f22337f435516b657df9657c88.jpg

No 12 pushrod is not rotating as I'm running 2000 rpm, no load to bed lifters. Pretty messy with rocker cover off at those revs.

I need to pull off side cover and have a look?

Cut the top out of an old, dented rocker cover. Saves some mess.

That sucks. Double checked the pre load?
Pull the rocker and check it, check the push rod ends.
I would pull the side plate. Pull the lifter and inspect it, make sure it feels good in the bore.
If all seems ok maybe just a dud lifter not spinning? It happens.
Even before you pull anything, take out the plugs take off the side plate and then turn over by hand and see if it spins at all.

Nah got a rusty one.
Changed rocker and rod though they looked ok. Set lash 0.006" cold. Waiting for a civilised hour to start making noise.

I saw some aftermarket SBC ones recently with removeable tops. Ugly looking things so not a long term thing but would be good for exactly what you are doing.

Got handy several years bak myself, cut open top rocker cover
also a sideplate drilled holes in the upper edge, when fitted, running engine to check pushrod rotation.

No mess :)

Hi Clay, just curious as to the .005" lash asjustment quoted, are the lifters you're using-hydraulics or solids?
