How did the lifter look and feel in the bore?

Waiting to get car on the ground for easier access Adam, which it now is. Would have to be the back one, wouldn’t it.

5thou lash+/-1 by Gregory’s. Haven’t had adjustable lifters since 1996. Prolly should get a factory manual. Oil coming up the pushrod ok.

Lifter seems to move freely in the bore and both seem undamaged. Some signs of rotation on the lifter face. Buff face gently eith 000 steel wool, re-oil, dab of the supplied lube and reinstall.

Didn't use the lube initially on advice of old jonno.f62c472612be7587e6b64712f7432deb.jpg2d4093b36f08013f8effc95461658cd0.jpg

I will reinstall at right angles to slight wear mark. Should I be able to compress the lifter at all? Seems solid.

Hi Clay, are they new lifters?

Just FYI, i got supplied solid lifters a while back, that should have been hydraulic. Soon returned them in a fury.

The pushrod side of lifter, should have a springclip to retain the pushrod seat and internal hydraulic mechanisms.

You should be able to compress the pushrod seat slightly. Oil would leach out of the hole, on the side of the lifter.

Thanks for the prompt reply Jaso. New Crow lifters. Can't compress it on the bench with a push rod. Wondering if I should tidy up the face with every paper as it is slightly evident where the love has been travelling in one direction.

Thanks, all i can say is, lack of being able to compress will be the internals doing its job really well.

Two pushrod still not turning really. I think maybe the back one turned 90deg then stopped. Both lifters look ok apart from the fact both slightly scuffed. No 2 scuffed in two orientations. Reinstalled at third orientation. I don't know starting to suspect the cam.

I'm going to try swapping a few lifters around next.

So swapped no2 exhaust lifter. New lifter rotated pushrod about 90deg then stopped. The suspect lifter working fine in no2 inlet. Either the bore or the cam I guess?

Have a 161 here I'm considering swapping cam. Im assuming it's stock.

Have you any old lifters you can put in and check for rotation?

I think I've eliminated the lifters as an issue Adam.

Proceeding to bed cam in.

Spoke to engine shop this morning and they reassured me that the lifters and cam will continue to bed in and eventually start turning. Very reassuring to say the least.

Just sorting clutch hydraulics then bed rings.

Running sweet after 90 minutes driving. Added coolant and adjusted 1 or two loose tappets. Will change oil and filter before 6000km trip coming up. Thanks Dave, Adam, Jaso, Byron and others for input.

So changed oil and filter other day. Tappets rattle about one second on fire up. Once warm it is sewing machine quiet. Run up to estimated 4200prpm. ( 100kph 1.59 second gear, 3.08 rear, 235 60 R14 tyres. Cut open the filter, nothing but clean oil in it that I could find.

Adelaide to Broken Hill tomorrow. Certainly don't envisage any overheating issues as forecast says minimum 4, max 7, with 20mm rain along the route.

Thank fellas. Spare stuff yes. I resisted bringing an axle shaft and alternator on weight grounds, but got hoses clamps belt plugs, fuel pump, even a wiper motor.

Nudged up to 110kmh in second a couple of times, estimated 4600rpm, no sign of valve bounce. However dip stick shorted coil feed and melted some of the loom. Trundled in to the Hill on a hotwire. Damn, knew I should have brought a spare wiring loom.

How Unfortunate Clay, on the Coil wire to Dipstick short.

The one item you dont pack on a trip, will be the one thing you need.:)

Last year, i drove my EH to Bathurst for the EJEH nationals....had fitted new brakes all round the week before....had some teething problems with the brake drums prior to leaving, got it sorted, then felt we are ready to go....
(packed a few other spare bits n pieces that never got used)

Anyway, got to a tinpot town, had a squeally brake lining, n thought, i got nothing to shut it up.

Walked into a local hardware, bout some rough sandpaper. So at the 1st nights accomodation, pulled that drum off, to roughup the linings a bit.

Off we went again...:)

So it happens,
