You can also just buy universal replacement rubber boots for balljoints from a company called 'Roadsafe' that I've found to be quite good, if you don't think there's anything wrong with the balljoints themselves.
I think Burson are a retailer for them, if you're interested.

Yeah. I'm no mechanic, and I actually find them difficult to confidently assess.
I did some uppers in a car of mine last year (there was a noise in the front end, and I detected they had some play) and it didn't fix the noise.
Then the noise got really bad a few days later (super embarrassing groaning sound when I steered), so I did the lowers, and the noise went away perfectly. They must have been close to failing totally.
But once I had the old lower balljoints out, they were tight - no play - and felt fine in my hand. Bizarre. No wonder I struggled to diagnose the issue.
But a good quality balljoint can last ages if it's properly protected. There are some good ones out there, and some not-so-good ones.

I ordered 6 bottom ones from Rock Auto, so I'll have a few spares. I'll still try the boots from Bursons though as it is easy to crack the joint and whack on some boots and see if it works. I have to get the Prem out of the shed in the next month to get a parking hoist put in, so once its back in the shed on the hoist I'll crack them and see what they are like.

With regard to pressing out the lower ball-joints, would this set do the job?
