That interior is beautiful. The red on the rocker covers would drive me bonkers though.

Is it the correct rocker cover red for the era? Sorry if I've missed reading that anywhere above.

No it’s a spray can pretend HK to HZ red. Nowhere near the right colour. I’ll post up images of the engine with the TH400 off and you can see it.

New HEI dizzy and coil in. Unfortunately with the module on the side of these you cannot place them the same as a red points dizzy sits with the vacuum advance mech on the passenger side, it has to be around the back near the firewall, so the spark leads don’t lay as nice as they do originally. Will try and sort them out better later. Plus the factory vacuum advance hose is too short.

Rather than modify the original harness or butcher a near 50 year old ignition switch, I bought a Rare Spares one and modified it. Probably could have done it neater but it’s a copy and it just means the harness plug won’t quite push on as far. Will do for now. Probably should have used a single strand from some larger cable.

Forgot to add this. You can see why I bridged pins 11 and 12. 11 is run, 12 is start.

Runs like a Swiss watch now with the HEI dizzy and coil. I used BPR5FS-11 plugs and set them to 1.2mm gap. Dizzy set to 10deg initial. Starts, warms up and idles like an injected engine. I planted it on my driveway and with the skinny 215/65/14 tyres and LSD it lit up both tyres without hesitation.

What I’m looking for is a photo of an original 9/74 to 12/74 HJ 5.0L to get the PCV hose and the vacuum advance hose right. They both want to interfere with the throttle cable.
The PCV hose comes out at the front does a 90deg, somehow clearing the water hose between the thermostat housing and the manifold. Then turns 90deg again, runs down the throttle side somehow and does a 180deg turn into the PCV in the passenger side rear rocker cover. The vacuum advance hose does something similar, just a lot smaller.

I have drawings for how late HQ works which is the same engine however they are pull rod throttle with a rear linkage. HJ has a front cable throttle like an LH with a return spring at the rear. HJ books are no good as they only show the 1/75 onwards version with a canister and PCV moved to the front driver side. Torana doesn’t help either as it has the PCV on the driver side front too.

I have a repro PCV hose and original vacuum advance hose and neither seems to have a logical placement that doesn’t foul with the throttle cable and/or return spring. It’s going to be tricky to find a decent reference, hard to see too with all the heater and thermostat bypass hose arrangement in the way, plus the massive A/C pump there too.

The latest Unique Cars magazine has a 1 owner Monaro, but I don't know if it is pre Jan '75. It would be worth a look to see if it has a photo of the engine bay without the air cleaner fitted.

Thanks Laurie. If the PE1 wheels are original to it, it has to be post 1/75 though.

Off topic. While looking for a photo, I came across this 5/75 Monaro, and was wondering if the heater tap set up is factory? I guess it is because it still has Utilux hose clamps everywhere?

Yes. That is for the non A/C engine. It does heater plus bypass. That engine has a Holley and you can see the PCV at the RH front as it should in 5/75.

I forgot to post this. Here is the original Fishermans Bend Plant 16 engine red. You can see the wrong red on the heads (and rockers) against the block and sump.

I used Motospray Holden Red, but I can't remember if it was on the motor or gearbox.
