I’m pretty sure they were still issuing block and piston sets and short motors unstamped up until release of HQ. Replacement would have either a police issue number or a 173, depending on timing.

Have seen many engines but never a 2600N.
I would just find a 2600s and use that and would be correct prefix for lc gtr.

They do exist, but I have only ever seen a few over the years along with others of similar vintage like 161N, 186N, 308N etc. Certainly not as common as NT, NL etc.

In GMH's Service bulletins and other sources they made it quite clear what was going on for allowable service displacements. They say for EH to HK to use 161, 186 or later 173. For LC they say for 138 and 161 to use 138 or 161 or later 173, and for 161S they say use 161 or later 173. There is a big NOTE below it all that says:

"With reference to the allowable service displacements, the original standard of durability should be followed, i.e. 186S engines and short motors should be replaced by 186S equivalents with steel crankshafts and premium bearings. Also note that with the introduction of HQ displacements, provision will be made to continue supply of 186 and 186S service engines. Therefore 202 engines may not be used for service of models prior to HQ."

The above note explains why there are a number of NG and NJ prefix 186 engines around cast after HQ engine introduction - they will be the 186 and 186S service replacements. Meaning there should be NG, NJ and NK engines around along with all the other service replacement engines, some rarer than others.

In short, what you ideally want is (if you can find one) is a 2600N or an NF. Both will be pretty elusive as most people wouldn't bother when these cars were a few years old, they'd just use whatever was available including another 2600S or 2850S even just a common as arseholes 161H, 2600H, QD or CD engine. If people just wanted a new GMH block and piston kit they'd probably just have bought an ND and a set of S bearings and re-used their crankshaft, or did what most would have done and found a complete 186S, changed the sump and had a big smile from the performance increase. I wouldn't get too hung up on it though, just use any old 161 or 173 and build it up as an S engine. If you ever find a service replacement engine at a sensible price just keep it stored away and if you ever sell the car offer the car as you have it with the service replacement engine to go with it. Its exactly what I've done with my HK GTS, kept the 307 aside and using a 350 block. Will do the same with my GTS327.

Or find something obscure like a GD or a ZD or XZD or N5D or FE. Most people wouldn’t know what any of them were, dress it up as a 2850S and smile at the confused faces at car shows. You’ll buy blocks like that as scrap.
