She was putting an auto in and had posted the manual on gumtree for $1000.
Makes Ben's prices look pretty good. He's getting me a dust cover for $25. I left one of these boxes out of my HX van in a shed when I moved out about 1983.

$1000. Is that what 3 speeds are worth? I've got one, $1000 to a good home.
I doubt that very much

That box without the ribs would probably fetch good money to the right buyer. Probably had the reverse screw front seal too.

Ben priced the box at $150. $100for bell housing, bolts and fork. $25 dust cover.
Common practice seems to have been to use a modified 4spd shifter, simply welding up 4th gear position. Column shift and Speco after market floor shifts both have a reputation of jamming, as did the old rat trap mechanical clutch. I would run FE to EK master and slave, with adapter bracket to bolt the slave to the two rat trap mounting holes. Same as hydraulic clutch conversion for M20 Australian 4spd.

3 speed extension housing doesn't have the boss's for the shifter mounting bolts.
The after market ones I have seen use the 2 top bolts on the extension housing.
CF Bedford had a 3 speed but I don't know what that shifter looked like?

All 3spd boxes had the oil slinger on the input shaft until late in 1973.

Weld up the reverse gate and disable the reverse lever. 1st becomes reverse, 2nd = 1st, 3rd = 2nd and 4th = 3rd.

Thus...has anyone ever seen/ purchased what it todays terms be called a " rip shifter" for an Aussie 4 speed?.
I know the poor old syncros may not deal with it very well, but just askin'.

Yep that's what I did on my old HQ race car and used a 4 speed extension housing. Nicer shifter and better position than the Speco ones everyone was using.
How did you get that to work ? there is no bearing retainer on the 4 speed housing

Buggered if I remember the fine details Troy that was over 30 years ago
I don't recall it being very complicated- 4 speed extension housing, shifter,
cut the hole in the 4 speed position. If there was more involved I cant recall
and the scrutineer that sealed the box may have cracked it.

I read this this arvo and thought? That's not right. So I looked in the LJ parts book and 3 spd all synchro and 4 spd aussie share the same part number for the bearing housing. The bearing slides into the bearing housing then the housing/bearing assy slides into the back of the casings and the extension housing locates both on 3 and 4 speed.
Tech tip: The circlip thickness/wear and the extension housing gasket thickness are critical for output shaft movement which can cause jumping out of gear problems.............................As well as the input shaft gaskets, circlips etc.
These boxes aren't getting any newer so pick parts wisely.

Maybe you'll want to recheck those numbers Rob.
From the LJ catalogue.

I haven't looked into this properly yet but is this what stops the bearing falling out the back of the box ? ( where the arrow is in pic)

Yes, well, what an absolute brain fart that was? I had memories..........sweet memories..............but clearly wrong.
I looked up both boxes in the parts book then referred to the section.
Sadly, I went to the back of the section which related to Tri-Matic and stated "all models"
I have enrolled myself into an advanced parts book reading course for those with Alzheimer's
