I should have listened to my intuition before 24Nm did this.

Thanks Dave. Thrust rings seated correctly. Seems to be turning ok but still firm.Clay, the lay gear should not be tight to turn. Check the thrust washers to ensure they are seated correctly with their pressed tab located in the recess.

I managed to source a 3.08 open centre Borg Warner shortened to LC width and set up for Torana drums, complete with tailshaft to suit LC for a good price. I just need to cut off the torana mounts and set up for leaf springs. So I haven't got any uni joints yet. I'm hoping the tailshaft will fit up but it is being shipped from Perth.

I cut the end off the rat trap fork as it isn't needed, and clearance under an FB ute is limited. Plan was to drill a hole to hold the return spring but frOcken hard as, so welded on a half washer to catch it.
I had to bend up a bracket to catch the other end of the spring as well. Not very elegant but does the job. The Slave is just a FE to EK. They work fine and about $40 for a Protec. Hose a bit cheaper from memory, but was a substitute part which had the storeman juggling catalogues. Fully oldschool at car Parts Plus. They work well with FE to HK master, which is same as FE HR brake master. Original ones of these generally just need new rubbers and a hone to get by, so I've never bought one to know the price. The brackets are $100 or so. All up cost is in the order of $200 to $300. You need the slave rod but easy to make if you don't have one. Kits go for about $500 on eBay etc.

Bolted up with the engine tilted forward, there was a massive oil leak from the input shaft. I tilted it back to how it sits in the car and the leak ceased.
As recall there is no front seal, just an oil slinger arrangement, but the input shaft bearing may be supposed to be a sealed type.
I will have to revisit the manual.

I did wonder at the Gregory’s. It’s not my first choice of technical reference. It describes two 4 speeds, standard and heavy duty, both with seals.
Possibly I could have matched parts from one of my spare boxes and fitted the seal that came with the kit. Undoubtably it is a fairly early one being the smooth case.

Oil leakage from the front of the gearbox when the vehicle was parked nose down on a steep slope is the very reason GMH revised the 3 & 4spd boxes to have an oil seal on the input shaft.

I am not overly happy with the clutch slave setup however. I am using a cast alloy Dellow adaptor to FB slave, with pushrod to inner hole in the rat trap fork. I cut the end of the fork off, deeming it superfluous. Very hard steel.
The hose inlet was touching the subframe leg seam lip and I had to grind a bit to create minimal clearence. Also the piston/rod/fork angles are less than ideal which may lead to uneven and premature wear on the slave bore, as well as stressing the bracket and bolts.
So after reading a good review on Fb I bought this resto spares one.
After doing so I realised it requires a change to EJ HK slave. It also runs the rod in the outer hole, making for lighter less direct pedal. At the moment although not heavy, the clutch is fully released before pedal is half way to the floor.
This is advertised as a conversion part for FE FC FB EK however I fear it may clash with the subframe leg. Will mock up on a spare housing and see.
