So Cheryl the feryl still had the three speed on market place, reduced to $200. Sent her an offer of $100 and now I have another box which came with dust cover, bell housing and floor shift. b886ec2bf0d55beec356ebc9f017dcd5.jpg

Casting around looking for a rebuild kit for the M15 Australian 3 speed, a few places on line have them at around the $240 mark. Same kit for M20, M21 four speed, which people are more likely to be rebuilding on here.

I ended up getting one through Car Parts Plus over the counter at Lonsdale SA. $200 even. These guys are great. I haven’t seen the kit yet mind you.

This thread has stayed well on topic.
Thus...has anyone ever seen/ purchased what it todays terms be called a " rip shifter" for an Aussie 4 speed?.
I know the poor old syncros may not deal with it very well, but just askin'.

Reply to an old post obviously.

I tries a couple of shifters back in the day on my 3 speed.

Had a Speco H pattern and with it I had to keep the hole in the floor open, and a 1/2 inch ratchet handy.

It was about the right size to unjam the linkages and I had a few spare ones laying around.

A mate then sold me what we called a Pogo Stick shifter.

It could be used for both 3 and 4 speed boxes.

You just added another rod to the reverse linkage and poked it up through the floor for reverse.

It was a single plane shifter as opposed to the H pattern.

It worked a lot better than the Speco and I never had a single jam up with it when I was using it.

I transferred it from the 3 speed to the 4 speed when I put it in.

Would use one again in a heartbeat.

Never seemed to be an issue with adverse wear in the box either.

Cheers

Rob

Thanks for the  info Rob.

There are a lot of XU1 type race cars running the Ken Zinner?? box  in Victoria.  I understand they are named after the guy who made/rebuilt them . They feature a 2nd stcik for reverse.   Sounds similar.

I’ve got a 4 speed shifter with reverse welded up. Certainly better than the horrible notchy speco shifters. Won’t be using it however. Going column shift.

The "Pogo Stick" shifter you mentioned was possibly an "Impala" shifter.

I reckon you are right with that.

You just jogged my memory.

It was a great bit of gear.

Selectors and gears look fine, the ones I can see. There is a slight lash in the clutch gear. Nil in reverse and minimal in top. Bit more in first and second. Input shaft has a bit of deflection. Synchro rings appear ok but really I don't have a clue.

I've got two other boxes I can check the lash on but based on what I see I'm inclined to just put a kit through this one.71ee165d3717e478f755ffe7265f1af2.jpg
There is plenty of spare room inside the case.

There will always be deflection on the input shaft on a removed gearbox as the other end is supported by the spigot bearing.

Gears can look fine, its the bearings, input and cluster where the noises start.

Thanks Rod. The kit should deal with any bearing and cluster shaft issues at least, and hopefully new thrust washers will improve lash. I haven’t played with a gearbox before.

Yes, thanks Dave. It’s the smooth case out of an early HQ. Shift feels nice and precise.

It appears I need a flat plate 1 5/16" spanner to remove the input shaft bearing, unlike later 4 speed with snap ring.210e311bcc53f406237343c696ce35af.jpg

Ended up using a special tool I call a bastard wrench. Minimal damage to the retainer which doesn't seem to bear in anything any way.

Ok so it's the oil slinger Dave. I'm waiting on a ktg manual. The vh shows a snap ring on the four speed.

With the box back together minus bell and extension housing and side cover, the laygear is rather tight. End play with the new thrust rings is zero so I’m thinking it will loosen up when they bed in.

The speedo drive gear appears to be flogged out, being concave on the gear face and not much in the way of teeth in the centre, or is this how they are?712d060d879a0a8523031801fb414316.jpg

Cheers Trevor. I suppose they can be obtained somewhere. Might pull the extension housing of my spare first.

I just pulled a 4 speed apart & found the speedo gear clip wedged between 2 & 3

But the speedo gear looks good  :spoton:

Clay, the lay gear should not be tight to turn. Check the thrust washers to ensure they are seated correctly with their pressed tab located in the recess.

Yes, the Aussie 4 spd and the all syncro 3 spd changed from the oil slinger to the oil seal input shafts in early 1974.

Thanks Dave. I got a HKTG Gregory's manual which has got me there. There was a HQ transmission manual on gumtree but it seems someone beat me to it.

I got the speedo gear from my spare trans. Not as bad but still well worn. I will try CPP Monday.
