Hi all , I have problems with my wiper motor that I can’t work out. It was purchased as being totally reconditioned and re zinced , Initially I thought it may have been the switch, so I connected a Preslite motor up which worked fine , so I know it’s not the switch. On further investigation with the motor I noticed three contact points for the plastic cog ? Is this correct for a Lucas wiper motor ? thanks Paul.

I just saw that your wiper motor has an empty hole for the cover plate bolts. I recall that mine was the same, does anyone know if this correct or are they just missing?

Sorry for thread steal.

Do you have three wires going to motor. I can only see two, it might be behind them?

Yeah , three wires Marty,a fabric sheathed one.I’ve pulled the cog out so I don’t know what location it goes back into , there doesn’t seem to be any locating points on the casing.
James I wondered that too , I received it like that.

Should all three tabs be making contact with the steel ring on the underside of the cog?

I thought one pin touches another when it hits lump or dip in cog creating or breaking a circuit.

No there’s no lump on this one Marty , but there is a cut out section on the underside on the contact ring which I assume those three contact points go into , I’m not really sure as to what position the cog sits. There is a indication point on the cog (arrow) but I’m not sure where this corresponds to for alignment if at all .

Looks to me like this is where the three contacts run.

Yeah that would make sense Dave, I only saw the two wear marks , but yeah one contact must be on the very inner.Do you know what position the cog would sit?The workshop manual only touches on the preslite version , not much on the Lucas.

Cog only goes in one way. As it turns it activates copper contacts

I'd run 12v to contacts and first make sure the motor works, then worry about cog.

Update on the wiper motor,so I found the armature was stuffed I swapped it with an another, and it worked fine .I also found the small arm coming straight from the motor was longer , so they must vary in length, meaning the top of the linkage was hitting the top of the plenum.
So beware I purchased this motor a few years back ,zinc plated and rebuilt for LC Torana, it was neither rebuilt or for LC Torana .
Anyway all sorted . Thanks guys.
