Hi All,

I see lots of pictures of cars with the licence plate blanked out or obscured by a finger etc.

What is the reason for this?

Is it possible to find an address from a licence plate? Or is it just paranoia?

Can I post pictures of my car with the licence plate visible without thinking it can lead someone to my address?

Cheers, Tom

Better not drive it with the plates on display then. I honestly don't see why plates are hidden in photos.

No idea mate. Maybe the same reason people post F on Facebook pages.

Yeah I don't really get the paranoia here either. You can drive your car around in public, go to events and shows, do the shopping, go on road-trips, be seen by everyone - and even be followed home to your driveway etc - but for some reason people don't want their plates shown online. I'm actually really interested to understand the reasoning too.

No real idea, either , except possibly why give out more info to a possible scammer, who takes your photo and can then easily siphon VIN and registration expiry.  ( I just ran some plates on qld rego check and came up with that info).

If it's your car then it's your choice. It is really easy to get owner details from the rego if you know how. :innocent:

If a car is on display at a show with the plates still attached/not covered then I figure that's the owner's decision and they're happy for their plates to be photographed.

But if I take a photo of someone else's car on the street I will obscure the number plate because I feel they didn't have the choice to obscure it themselves. It's just common courtesy.

I always thought the idea made no sense at all.

But nowadays in the era of visual information being shared on a big scale about particular cars, there is unfortunately a bit of a risk of a consequence of this with modified cars if people decide to be real... clap claps... not sure how else I can write that.

Below was sent to Jay, the owner of the VN fitted with extra brap... Gus from S.M. did a video on it recently broke the internet, and its popularity/exposure was obviously a factor in this.

Bloody spewing. I like to ignore this most of the time but there are some bad people in this world.

A mate of mine who worked for police intelligence said that Service NSW was deeply infiltrated by bikie gangs. Someone sitting in jail could see your car on the net, make a call, find out where your car is, where you work, who else is likely to be home, whether you have a gun or dog and your car will be in a shipping container on one of his properties within a week. So yes there is good reason to blank out plate on the net otherwise you just making shopping lists for some very nasty crims

Back in the bad old days, before encryption was a thing, the low-lives used to listen to the cops on a radio scanner (and who didn't) and when they heard someone do a check on a car they fancied, they'd write down the owner's address and then, later that night... no more car.

Rather ironic really... but off topic for this thread.

This type of event was why people would routinely remove their plates and obscure their rego label when taking iffy card to the drags or events like the Easternats.

Yeah I totally understand the logic if people have excessive mods / non-engineered conversions etc that they don't want to draw extra attention to. Man I miss the good old Easternats!

I'm sure the Police would be very understanding if you covered your plates on such events as Rockynats or Summernats cruises.

Or any car cruise event.

Plenty of people taking pics & video to post online for that.

I personally don't understand the idea of covering your plates .

You could go do circuit racing or drags then find out your warranty has been voided thanks to someone taking pics of number plates or vin numbers.

Why do you have a mural of an ugly old bastard holding a camera painted on the back of your car? :P

I don't know how to find an address from a licence plate but was hoping it was not as easy as some of these answers would suggest

If someone could see my rego details that included the VIN and expiry etc I wouldn't think that is enough for concern but being able to find an address would concern me

I have seen pics of my car on sites from coffee meets so guess it it too late and now lockdown is over I expect to go to more events

Had it out on the weekend and got lots of smiles and waves from all different people, was great!

It's a deterrent for number plate hunters :)
