g'day all 

starting to restore the horns on my lc gtr 

cleaning the alioy trumpets they appear to be powder coated !!

what colour black

Not sure about LC but my LJ horns are unmolested (still factory sticker) so I spat on a rag and gave them a rub for the photo. I'm no expert but this topic (engine bay sheen) has been flogged and someone said once, off the gun gloss acrylic is very close to factory finish. I tend to agree. Its not satin in my view. Depends how much of a purist you are I guess. Could even use gloss enamel (not 2 pac) Fiddly bits pressure can would do the trick as would dry off to the right sheen just wouldn't be very durable if petrol spilled on it.

Engine enamel would be durable but quite glossy. The earlier cars I know they used to just slop all the paint leftovers in a drum and maybe some black pigment. That paint would do subframe, firewall and whatever. There wasn’t a formula as such then.

In my car (Adelaide) they used the gunmetal blue/grey colour in the boot to do under all my guards but not undercarriage (floorpan) which seems unusual.

I've seen a mix before, it's an Adelaide built car mate, don't let anything surprise you. Some of them where pretty rough, the production line stops for nothing & GMH was a company wanting to make a profit. They're not Rolls Royce's !

it's same as engine bay not gloss & not satin inbetween

so what about the alloy part being powdercoated

Hi Albert, is been 50 odd years since these things were painted.Unless you know of an engine bay untouched since then it’s extremely hard working all that out .
That pic of Mark’s does look glossy , it may be they varied.
I just did most of my under the hood stuff Satin black , except for the booster which came back from PBR a gloss black.
Back in the 80s I remember just about everyone doing up cars hit the engine bay and just about everything in it gloss black which I don’t think was correct.

I'm confident my engine bay paint is original as it looks shitty. I'll think you'll find the alloy part you are referring to is what we used to call 'pot metal' (same as matchbox cars) . You also seem to be trying to make a distinction between the 'trumpets' and the body of the horn. I thought the horn was totally manufactured of pot metal not just the trumpet? As for powder coating, I very much doubt GMH went to that extend with any parts on the cars back then, but then again I can't say for certain because the horns would have been painted (coated)before being installed in the engine bay so you could assume that it was a different paint finish or process.anything is possible.

no worries boys 

mine are original and the trumpet section is diecast alloy ,

the body of the horn ( the part with the elec bits) is pressed steel .

while i was scapping them i was pretty sure the alloy bits were powdercoated ,

the type of paint between the alloy and steel was totally different.

The horns were manufactured by RVB in Moorabbin VIC so more than likely also painted on their assembly line.

As mentioned earlier, Holden didn't paint the horns. They were painted by the manufacturer of the horns, usually RVB.

 

Holden would've screwed RVB down to the lowest contract price, so whatever ever process was the cheapest at the time was used.

 

I'm not sure that powder coating was as commonplace in the early 70s as it is today.

Yeah, agree Dr T. 

By "Holden", I meant the vendor of the parts, ( as Holden would be the one specifying the finish, and paying the invoices to the vendor).

yes understand what all of you guys are saying 

when i was cleaning the horns for refurbishing , to my knowledge of powdercoating ( not a lot ),

i was pretty shore the alloy part was powdercoated ,

but i will take heed of the people that know

Hi the horns were painted by RVB not Holden, they are a semi gloss black in acrilyc
