Found it in the driver footwell after a drive ... the ignition switch now seems not right but i don't recall there being such a spring inside it ...

Brake light switch?. Can you measure? Also that plastic lug is it part of where the spring came from too maybe?

It's the spring out of the electrical ignition switch mounted to the steering column. The end of the plastic housing has broken away and the spring has fallen out.

It is the spring that makes the key automatically return from the crank position to the ON position.

Ah indeed it was. I guess 47 year old plastic has its limits after all ...

It is for parts like these that have me kicking myself every day for tossing old Torana bodies on the tip in the 80's and early 90's.
