Hey all,

I was taking the stone guard off my xu1 today and noticed what looked like drips of a sticky resin on the inside of it.

Anyway I looked for the source and found it was coming from the back of the alternator regulator.

So I guess it is on its way out? Should I repair or get a new 70 Amp one?

This one is a Bosch 40 Amp and dated 1979 so not original to my car (2/73)

Car is original but has a thermo fan fitted that draws a bit of power when turned on.

I would like to keep it looking original if possible

Ideas?

Cheers

Brian

Brian the date code on this Bosch looks like 329 which is September 1973.

I would have thought your 1973 XU1 would have been factory fitted with a Lucas alt with internal reg.

yes you are right Dave (again) 329 Sept.73. My mistake

I don`t know what brand it came out of the factory with, this Bosch was on it when I brought the car.

Pretty sure by 1973 all LJ were fitted with Lucas internal reg alternators.
I reckon use what suits your purpose. I would consult with an auto sparkie or an instrument repairer about using a higher amp alt with a 30amp ammeter. Forum member VDO (Chris) should be able to offer expert advice on the subject.

I have never been able to find an answer to which alternator the L34 came with. I have seen good original cars with 3 inch pulleys fitted to both Bosch and Lucas alternators. Maybe they got both???

By December 1974, the Lucas seems to have been discontinued.

I managed to get on to an old school auto leccy, he recommended a Bosch 55 amp for my car as it has a thermo fan on it.

Unfortunately no longer available new. But he has a reconditioned one I can have.

I have a Lucas 15AC which I will get rebuilt too so if I ever want to put back to factory it is there.

The auto leccy said parts are NLA for them but he has parts.
