Hi All,

A bit of a long shot but hoping that I could gain some insight into an issue that has just appeared.

Just replaced both unis, and replaced the bearing/seal/locking ring on one axle in my banjo. They all seem to be doing great. However car seems to stumble and surge while in D waiting at the lights, if the lights are long enough the car actually will stall. It will also hesitate/misfire when taking off too.

One thing I've noticed is that when If I pull up to the light and pull the choke out a cm or 2 it doesn't have this issue. Also it doesn't have any of these issue when driving.

I've spent the last few days racking my brain trying to figure this one out, but haven't had any luck!

Cheers.

Pulling the choke on is raising the idle speed for you?
Should also be richening up the idle mixture too.
(Assuming the choke flap and all the bits are there)
Is it idling ok in park?

Maybe the mixture screw needs richening up a tweak

Hey Bruiser,

It has the exact same problem in park, and reverse with the foot brake on. It'll idle fine for 15-20 seconds and then begin to falter/surge and gets progressively worse up until it stalls.

It also seems to be completely fine at lights for the first 20 minutes of my drive, then it'll begin playing up.

I should also add that it has the bog stock standard stom carby on in, it was rebuilt by a shop 12 -16 months ago.

Sounds like a vacuum leak

Hi Rodomo,

From what I can see the carby has a single vacuum hose that runs off it to the dizzy, I done the ol' suck test and seems to hold vacuum fine. The other I could see is one that goes from the intake manifold to the auto tranny. This too seems to hold up to the suck test.

Thanks Gents!

Theres more places a vacuum leak could be.
Anywhere there is a joint, fitting or hose in the carby, or manifold
could be one.
If the brakes being on has an effect, it could be the brake booster itself.
But pulling the choke fixes it - every time?

It doesn't necessarily fix it, but prevents it. If that makes sense.

Like if I pull up to the lights, and pull the choke on a tiny bit the idle doesn't get worse and worse. However if it is already running like shit then pulling up the idle doesn't return it back to normal.

Thanks,

Standard 202? Check the 2 big screws that hold the float body onto the throttle body.

Thanks Caterham, I'll have a look.

It's pretty standard 202, the only mod is a blue HEI dizzy.

Well gents, just for the record it appears to have a been the coil on its way out. Replaced it with another 12v coil I had kicking about and it seems to run a dream. Thanks for all the help and suggestions!
