Rebuild/re-adjust the shifter, they are fine when in good nick but most are worn out and need a bit of attention to get them working nicely.

It still won’t ever have the shift quality of a Toyota box.

Make sure the clutch is set up right too. Must be fully dis-engaged when the pedal is in. Raced with one years ago and can be quite good, but not great.

Or the durability.

No,they vary in length,angle/bend to suit the floor consoles of the various model series they were fitted to. The shortest would have to be the LC/LJ shifter and the longest is the HQ -WB 1 tonner with bench seat.

What are your engine specs and how do you drive it?
A supra box is great for overdrive but if you have a really big cam they arent geared right to keep the engine up on the cam when you shift.
An M21 has good gearing but are obviously weak which is the downside.

Hi.
The longer a shift handle the more mechanical advantage you have so can be easier to change gears but has a longer motion.
Unsure if you have a console in your car? The shifter could be hitting against the console. When I have first setup Aussie 4 speed shifters I take the car for a drive with no console or dust boot to see the shifter is moving well in the gate especially in neutral and moves across easily to select each gear. Also make sure it is well greased.

That happens when the stick pops out of the gates in the levers within the shifter., usually because the tang that engages the levers is worn/rounded and/or the levers themselves are sloppy allowing too big a gap between them.

These old things can be a drama.

some simple checks -

- Are the little selector levers on the side of the gearbox tight on the flat sided dogs they fit on?  i.e. are the 2 nuts ( 1 on each selectors) tight.  And / or

- are the little selector levers actually flogged out. Easy to see, just undo the nut and slip it off and see if the hole in the selector is flogged.

- how much slop is there in all the long rods and pins they fit on?

Then there is the gear stick / shifter itself which can have a list of issues.

I think  the whole thing from shifter to gearbox can be purchased from Rares for $700?. ... or just the shifter itself for around $550.  Not sure on prices.

I actually got the Rares guy to take a new shifter out of the box the other day. TBH I thought it looked and felt really good.  Flashback to 1972.....a nice tight Aussie shifter!!

Once had an issue with linkage adjustment whereby I selected first and reverse gears the same time. Not a nice feeling.

Was just the reverse linkage needed shortening a tad from memory.

I used to carry a screwdriver to lever the stuck linkages when it would end up jammed.

Shitful setup.
