I have a red 308, 1000km since rebuild. temp gauge sits on 1/4 . .or slightly below .. But pretty much 1/4 on gauge. Is this too low or normal? I do not know where it should be at. I would have thought between 1/4 and 1/2 would be more desirable?

Any advice appreciated.

I would agree, maybe someone has installed the wrong thermostat (e.g. 160 instead of 180) or removed it altogether? The opening temps are also hit and miss on new ones these days, although usually hotter rather than colder.

edit: Oh, could also just be the gauge, is it reliable? Check the top hose temp with a known good thermometer as a sanity test

You can probably buy a cheap aftermarket manual gauge and plumb it in without actually bringing the gauge end into the cabin. Once up to it's normal operating temp, just pull over and have a look under the bonnet.

^^ yep as Laurie said cheap temp and oil pressure gauges are handy to have as an easy "second opinion" to

sometimes sketchy factory gauges, especially after a rebuild.

Don't guess, put an accurate temp gauge on it and check what it is really doing.

Just ordered an IR  thermometer online. I will get a real reading and report back with results.

In my experience, IR thermometers are more accurate if they a reading the temperature of metal (e.g. head or radiator tank) rather than a porous surface like a black rubber hose.

I've had too many inconsistent readings from hoses, check the temp of various spots on the engine & radiator.

Would it be correct to take the reading from the inlet manifold? Meaning the block near the manifold or the manifold itself near the block? I really don't know myself.  I have been told that is the hottest part, where the radiator hose to block being the coolest? Noob here trying to work it out.

Was able to do real temp readings. It does seem like my temp gauge was maybe out a bit. Just shy of 1/4 on the gauge is 80 degrees for me actual measurement. Which I believe is a pretty good temp to be at. Just past 1/4 on the gauge was 94 degrees. Bloody gauges!

Cheers

I used a temp probe and sat that in the top of radiator waited for thermsotat to open read temp then looked at where the temp guage was sitting in cabin.
