Hi all ... been overseas for a month, come home decide to take the torana out for a run, 200 metres down the road a noise comes in to the driveline when I drop back in to second coming in to a corner. put it in third after the corner, noise disappears, back to second noise ... decide to drive home in third. Get to driveway, first, same noise, reverse and neutral same noise ... what is it?

Not really sure what the noise is but I am thinking might be failure in the clutch plate.

Check for loose flywheel too, i had what i thought was a g/box noise several years back sounded like a F'D bearing, it was a loose flywheel, chattering away.

Sounds like a bearing in the gearbox. As you go through the gears the load moves and noise changes. In top there is often no noise as the input shaft driectly drives the output shaft and the gears and countershaft have no real load.

Is it possible to take the box out and leave the engine in the car or does it all have to come out?

Yep make sum support brackets.
I bought some heavy duty shed hooks from bunnings, they had a square bent hook one end and J bend on other end.

I measured 200mm from the end of the square hook end and cut off the J.

The square end of the hook sits under the sump egde. The cut end sits into the Kframe pocket, toward rear of engine.

Sorry having trouble uplaoding pics.

But once gearbox is out, engine sits happily, with one support each side at rear and on front engine mounts. :)

We used to chuck tailshaft across the top of the guards and rope under the rear main. Taking great care not to scratch the duco of course......
Not.

In the video above the car is stationery, would the noise still happen if the input shaft or bearign in the gearbox was at fault or more likely to be a throw out bearing or some other thing?

Lookin at your vid, it sounds chunky.

Being away a month - You didnt attempt dropping the clutch and doing burnouts for fun? :)

If you havnt already started, begin the process of elimination.

Jack up car, on safety stands or hoist, high enough to get under and
1. As mentioned, check oil.
2. Remove flywheel cover(if 1) and look inside clutch area for obvious signs of failure, like throwout bearing or clutch bits n pieces.
And maybe attempt to move flywheel to see if there is any loose movement.
3. have someone in car working the clutch while its running (rear wheels in air). Use a stethascope on the gearbox housing to listen to the noise at various points on housing.
4. Drain Gearbox oil, look for glittery oil or chunky bits.
5. Pull Gearbox out, again look at throwout.
6. Pull Clutch off, again check flywheel bolts for torque.
7. After all that, if ya can find anything - pull apart Gearbox.

Attached pic for illustration purposes only :) been there done that.

Thanks for that detailed summary, will come in handy when I drop it to the mechanics on Wednesday.

And no .. didnt do any wheelies, 200m run down the street when the noise came in did not warm it up sufficiently :)

Are you going to get it up on stands for a look? If so, test the throw out bearing but slackening off the adjustment
at the fork end to make sure it is not riding on the clutch plate fingers. Nice and loose.
If the noise stops, you’ll know it’s the throw out bearing and you might just feel a bit better about changing the whole clutch then
I reckon it would come back when you press the pedal again and start to take up the slack
If the noise persists, see your doctor
Or someone who knows more about clutches than me
Best of luck, mate

I've swapped the box over with one I had in the shed ... yet to pull the other box apart to see what's inside.

Replacement box feels different, sort of tighter and clunkier, but maybe thats because the other one was loose ... also heaps quieter, finding other noises in the car now :(

OK so the box has been pulled apart .... seems one of the gears is missing three teeth, a few of the bearings have been smashed in to funny shapes and the main shaft has some serious wear marks on it ... total rebuild coming up.

Anyone know what a refurbed box is worth or what they are worth to do a refurb on .... ballpark figures are fine please.

I bought a kit recently. Was a tad shy of $200 in price from Car Parts Plus Lonsdale SA. Dearer online at $240. Rule of thumb says add another $200 labour.

Ball Park....could be 2k or so, to pay ya Mechanic to do it.

My box was around $1500 about 10 years back, reraced, had to have another 899 cluster shaft and a 2nd speed synchro from memory?? Cant lay my hand directly on that invoice.

Allowing for inflation on the $1,500 above, add ten years, the mechanic sent me a text today ... looks like it will be about $2,400.

Hope to be taking the car to him over the weekend for him to take it for a drive with the replacement box in it to check how it feels, clutch, throw out, etc. and we'll go from there whether to reapir or stick with what's in there. Box has to come out again to insert the speedo cog thats inside it (didnt check the spare box before putting it in). So need a wokring speedo, so if the box that's in there passes his test will put off repairing the old box for now. Otherwise if he thinks it might be a bit dodgie, will repair the old one and start afresh.

The mechanic is retired and a guy my brothers used to take their cars to about 30 years ago .... mad Holden/Torana nut, still mucks around in the shed a few days a week for some cashies and also building his retirement Torana currently.

Just wish I knew he was still pottering around a month ago when this whole saga started he would have had it from the word go instead of my now mechanic that didn't really want to touch the box from the get-go. He just took it out and swapped it over for me.. Anyway, I'm on the right track now ...

Well for a ball park guess at 2k or so....I wasnt far off hey :)

Im surprised it didnt climb up into 4K. Obviously its all dependent on whats required and available.

$4k could be nearing a possibilty if I went to a "real" mechanic as opposed to a retired mechanic who is just pottering about a few days per week to keep himself busy.

Do you need to take the box out to replace the drive gear? With the 3 speed you can get away with pulling the extension housing off in the car.
