What primer are people using or recommend over repaired panels? Looking for something to seal off the panel while other repairs are done. I'm not looking for a high build primer as I was going to do that all at once.

Maybe an etch primer?

Not really supposed to put an etch over filler. ATM I'm thinking I will put 2k epoxy over it.

👍 has anyone used epotec epoxy primer? I have never used it before but apparently it's the one to use in resto work.

Thanks. Do you know of you can get 1ltr reducer for it? All I see is 4ltrs which is way too much.

Best practice these days would be a 2 pack etch primer over bare metal.

Then do any filler work on top of the etch.

Then do another layer of etch before going to hi build/primer.

Encasing the bog between layers of 2 pack seems to be the best way these days.

No more bog on bare metal.

If you copy what Rob just said with "Epoxy" instead of "etch" then that matches my understanding perfectly.

 

I epoxied my bare steel, then did repairs, then epoxied over my repairs, then went to high build products.

I mean, you're always going to rub through certain areas etc. but pretty much that's what I did.

 

And mine was an Epotec. Worked perfectly except some odd areas near where I used rust-converter... something was not compatible with areas where rust converter had been used, then cleaned, then the epoxy was applied. I am not the only person to have identified this problem, as I've seen professional panel shops talk about it as well.

Panels will be back to bate metal with a coat of epoxy over the metal. Repairs will be done and more epoxy over the repairs. Then later I will high build prime the car. I was more looking for what products are best. Seems like epotec is the way to go.

You can’t go past the epotec 408 in the grey/green colour . Sticks to anything like the proverbial and is not porous like most primers

Yeah seems like the product to go for. Ill have to speak to the supplier to see if they do a 1ltr reducer for it.

Also it has less of the nasty isokeytones or whatever than the others.

That's an expensive kit and it's only 1ltr epoxy. I can get the 4ltr epoxy kit with hardener for $130. Without reducer tho

Im using an epoxy etch primer as first coat over bare metal.

Thats what it is marketed as, and what I was advised to use.

Epotec as well from memory.

Will check it out as I start organising my shed.

Stacked away somewhere at the moment.

Got it as part of a "system" that was 2 pack prep, single pack colour and 2 pack clear.

Hi, I agree with the epotec comments regarding exopy on bare metal and over repairs, there are some other companies that have great similar epoxy’s but the other thing with PPG they seam to be a lot more evolved in the resto and custom scene and produce products to suit. I think there is only 4L thinners but it’s still a good price for an epoxy product, some others sky rocket in price. Happy panel working. Cheers

I spoke to our paint rep last week and he said they only supply 4ltrs reducer. Its $70 so the whole kit is only $200. After speaking to the rep epotec seems to be the go to. We never really have to use it on the panel shop so just getting my head around the best procedure for the resto 👍

What’s the best alternative in a pressure pack aerosol?

Protec 458 is what I use aerosol etch prime. You should use primer surfacer over it before acrylic but 2k straight over. I’m just a back yard hack though.
