The drivers side mirror on my LX was flapping in the breeze when I bought the car.

I’ve pulled the mirror off to find one of the two screws that hold the mirror bracket to the car is just flopping around in the hole that’s been drilled in the door.

I noticed on the rare spare replacement bracket there are two screws but no nuts. The hole that’s good has what’s left of a plastic retainer.

What’s the correct way to secure the screws into the car door?

The issue is that the screw hole in my door is way too big as shown in the attached pic. Not sure why the pic is sideways 😂 but it’s the bottom hole (left hole) that’s the problem. The other hole at the top (right) will soon have problems as well I think.

There is a plastic plug that pops into the door and then the screw screws into that. Can get from rares as far as I know. They are designed to rip off if the mirror hits someone or something.

You could never buy these back in the 90s when I first built my hatch so I put nuts and washers inside the door.

Pain in the ass if you need to undo as door trim has to come off and tough to get hands up there.

I will be using the plastic plugs this time.

You can see the plastic bit in the link above. These screws look different to the SS mirrors though if you look at what comes in the kit for the SS mirrors below.

This is the plastic strip with the incorporated plugs for the screws.

If you didn't want to weld up the hole to reduce it, would nutserts be a fix? Cheers Ron

Nutserts in my car.

I did make my own holes, because the previous owner had installed some shitty mirrors in the wrong spot etc. so I had the luxury of just putting some holes the right size where I wanted them, and countersunk them into the GTS mirror bracket, which I had re-plated. But I'd have thought you could likely install nutserts into the existing holes.

Just make sure the bigger headed bolts don't clash with anything else, so that the mirror can mount down nice and firmly on the bracket.

Thanks all, good advice.

I checked the rate spares parts first but confused the plastic you’re referring to with the larger black plastic strip that goes over it. I thought they were a different version of the same thing.

I’ll try that first then nutserts.

I’ll avoid putting nuts on the inner door if I can.

Interesting about the plastic plugs being there to allow it to break off without damage, my first thought would have been to put a doubler plate on the back! Perhaps a plastic plate would be the go so the screws can still rip out if necessary? A one-piece plate with screw holes would be a lot easier to hold in place than fiddly little nuts.
