What sealant is everyone using for head bolts into water jackets these days. In the past I used a tin with Holden head bolt sealant had Holden and a lion on it. The last tin I bought was plain white that had head bolt sealing compound with no brand. Tried a few auto shops in town today with no luck and vacant stares. Thanks

Haven't bought it for a very long time - but the old tin on my shelf here is the same as the first one you mentioned - the original GMH Holden 'Sealing Compound' - Part #3835215 (250ml tin).

 

Looking online, there's not much on ebay.

Have used permatex aviation sealant quite a bit without any issues.

I’ve got an old one of these with permatex brand name on it.
Label looks virtually identical.
Permatex used to own loctite, not sure if they still do
But it must be the same stuff.
The permatex/loctite chart lists
Aviation form-a-gasket no. 3 as the equivalent to loctite 5923,
but not the loctite no.3, strangely.
Recently used my old one on some rocker studs and it didn’t leak.
Googling about the gmh stuff leads back here to old threads,
and there are even more types guys swear by, so there must be
plenty of different ones that will do the job

Always thread chase, and not tap holes clean.

Use new Head Bolts.

The use of Non-setting sealant, as above, is best so you can re-torque later.

I bought some of the Holden stuff 3835215 about 2 years ago from the local Holden dealer after my last tin which was about 30 years old went off , new tin was AC delco but same smelly stuff . But looks like this stuff has gone the same was as Holdens and no longer available

Actually, I've used the ARP stuff also with good success, but only on the current engine, alloy headed 308.

Thanks for all the replies, I will run the aviation glue in future. Have not been able to find a supplier of the AC Delco glue.
