I have a 355 Holden with a big cam and Bosch ignition.

What ignition leads would you recommend?

I don’t see many options at super cheap or repco.

Repco has OEX.

Is it best to just buy these online?

Thanks

Eagle 10 mm leads

10mm leads are showcar BS. 10mm leads don't provide any more spark.

8mm is more than enough. Eagle are a good brand however.

While we are talking leads anyone got any tips for installing the ones with the right angle ends at the dizzy end . I’ve had a few goes at it pointing the caps different directions but don’t think I’ve got it right , depending which way they point also affects which length one you use .

If you are using right angle leads, then I would suggest there is no "right" way of doing it, as all of the factory ones were straight.  There isn't much room for right anglr leads on the small dizzy cap, but easy if electronic ignition.

Good to know!... I had some Bosch 8mm leads and was wondering if they were going to do the job alright. Guess I'll give them a go and see what happens..

Yes not much room at all on the original dizzy cap for the right angle leads . I’m not sure why most leads available now are like this as years ago they were mostly straight

Repco has OEX.

I fitted an OEX alternator to my ute at 310,000 kays. It died at 400,000.  It wasn't just brushes either. A bearing failed and it completely fell to bits.

The factory leads for the Blue/Black (carby) Holden V8 were always 90 degrees at the cap end.

If you look in the factory workshop manual it shows how to lay them out.

I know the later ones were right angle but they have a different connector on the dizzy end it’s a female as opposed to the male end on the early ones, so it’s not a case of just making the one lead to suit all models . Could be wrong but pretty sure the red engines had the straight leads . I’ll have a look at the blue motor layout , but not sure it’s going to work though due to the smaller cap

That's true. I wasn't aware they are supplying right angle leads for the old style caps. The right-angled ones have ways been a bit fraught. It used to be possible to make up your own. I wonder if this is still the case.

I have a NOS set of 1974 dated leads and they are straight, so I am assuming all red motors were fitted with them.

Yes and back in the 80s all the replacement ones were straight but now all the brand name ones have the right angle plug

I think some on here might be confusing their Red V8s with Blue/Black V8s.

I stock new ignition leads & all 4 brands on my shelf for the Red V8 have straight ends & they are designed to fit the smaller female style cap.

The leads I have in stock for the Blue/Black V8s suit the larger cap with the male terminals & have 90 degree end boots.

The leads for the later 5.0 EFI motor are designed to fit the smaller car with female terminals as per the old Red V8s, but have 90 degree boots.

Dr Terry what brands do you have with the straight plug . I had another look this morning and nearly all leads listed for a red V8 have the angled plug . Eg these ones specifically say red

Bosch, PAT (Premier Auto Trade), Top Gun & Eagle.

See: https://autobarn.com...8002I/p/SP61870

That pic from Resto Country is wrong. Those 90 degree boots are for the male type cap terminals, they will not fit & Red V8 dissy. They even list them for a WB WTF ?

Yeah I noticed the picture has the female ends for the big dizzy cap . But they are the ones I bought and have the correct male end but with right angle ends . So what brand do you recommend are the Bosch any good ? I couldn’t find any top gun ones with straight ends they all were right angle

Yes, the Bosch are pretty good but I believe they are also the most expensive.

Some of these resellers get a bit lazy & use generic pics that don't show the correct fittings.

When I get to work tomorrow I will get you correct pics & prices for all.

These are the Top Gun ones I got. If the Bosch ones are straight I might just get a set of them, Repco have 20% off this month . The right angle boots are nearly impossible to try and get right, I don't like the way you have to squash all the boots and leads together in the middle of the cap

I just had a look at my stock. The Bosch, PAT & Eagle leads all have straight ends & Top Gun have now changed to 90 degree ends, so they're going back.

90 degree are just a lousy fit on the small cap, only use straight ones.
