Hi all,

Looking at fitting a R154 box and wondering how they fitted through the existing gearbox opening in an LJ.

 

I have a 202 with an M22 Aussie ATM & from front of bellhousing at engine, to approx centre of gear lever is around 610mm.

 

I am wanting to put a R154 box in the M22s place but apparently these gearboxes with a 190mm input shaft for this same measurement is 740 to 750mm.(130-150 too long).

 

I cant see how this wont get in the way of the handbrake?

 

Any help would be appreciated.

From what I can find out on the net, the R154 used to be available years ago with a DIRECT mount shifter housing(which placed the shifter pretty close to perfect for an LJ with a 6 or 8.

The new units today both have remote shifters, around 100mm towards the rear of the box.

Has anyone found a workaround for these new r154 boxes, can you use a direct shift mount from a R150 or 151 2wd box?

If it's like the other Toyota boxes I'd expect that there's an 18" shifter mount option that would line up with hole in the LJ floor. Finding one available may be the hard part.

I was under the impression that the R154 box won't fit in a LJ tunnel. Have you modified your tunnel to suit?

I am interested in this as I have searched many times for the clue that tells me what my Toyota box actually is.
I have a w57 or w58, and all I can tell is you can’t tell without checking gear ratios on those.
The world of Toyota 5 speeds is a mysterious place
It has the 6 bolt style direct mount shifter housing, I got lucky with mine, it went straight in without
needing changing around.
In an early commodore, it went in with room to spare. Maybe helpful if you know it’s tunnel
compared to your Torana one. The r154 is a lot wider though.

You have probably seen there are (3?) different housings to move the shift lever back and forth
Those remote shifters don’t appear to be adjustable for shifter location at all going by the pictures on the web.
Is your heart set on a r154 or do you have the box already?
Even the actual strength of these boxes is hard to pin down, but it seems the r154 is a fair bit stronger than the w58,
which would surely be a fair bit stronger than an Aussie 4spd

Been talking to Rexy on the quiet & a 154(190mm input shaft) just fits in an LJ without modification, but this is with a 308(the engine is 30mm more forwar than a 6??) a crs 160mm belhousing & 30mm spacer plate. 

So not sure how the box would fit with a six, as it will sit 30 towards the rear & maybe hit the tunnel?

 

My idea is to use the box with a six that Im already commited to build & eventually put an mild 308 in, with different bellhousings of course.

 

From what Ive read all the R series boxes run the same casing, have different ratios, same stength, but the thing i cant seem to find out can they all run similar shifters, ie can you use a 2wd R150/151 shifter on a R154(as these have the best ratios)??

 

Any Toyota gearbox gurus out there?

Thanks for the link Bruiser, but WITF can you buy the shifter housings from at a reasonable rate.

A mob called Drift Motion in the states have them, but buy the time you land one here I reckon youd be up for around $600, theres gotta be a cheaper way?, have toyed with the idea of a R150/151 but dont love the ratios, AR5s are another option, but none in AUS??

To distinguish the W57 and W58 gearboxes from each other you can put it 5th gear and count the number of rotations of the output shaft compared to the input shaft.
If you turn the input 25 times a W57 output shaft should rotate 29.03 times and a W58 would rotate 31.93 times. But to complicate it further the W55 which looks identical would rotate 29.4 times.
Then there's the difference between the alloy and steel sandwich plate versions.

Got onto a good second hand R154 Bruiser with the correct shifter position.

 

FYI there is nothing on the gearbox numbers wise that tells me what it is.

 

Input shaft is 190mm with 21 splines, output is 23,

I rotated front/rear shafts to check for correct ratios to make sure it was an R154.

Other than physical checks, I could see no other way of proving what type box it is.

Did you get your new cam into that engine yet?

Its at the Engine builders as we type, went for a Crow 35803 in the end.

Had another bit of luck,  picked up a virgin 202 for the build just days before the old block(40 thou already), was going to be cleaned & inspected.

Will report back to you when shes finished and running
